Code of Conduct

Welcome to the Consortium Library. To ensure a safe and secure environment, all library users are expected to respect the rights of others, the integrity of library resources, and the scholarly mission of the library. For further guidelines, see also the Student Code of Conduct and the Faculty Handbook.

All library users must:

  1. Use email or internet resources within the guidelines presented here, as well as those in the library’s Computer Use Policy and UAA’s IT Services Acceptable Use Policy
  2. Use cell phone quietly without disrupting others
  3. Treat others with respect and civility
  4. Cooperate with library employees
  5. Respond to emergency and security gate alarms and other situations as directed by library employees
  6. Leave the library at closing and limit use to authorized areas only

Behaviors that infringe upon the rights of library users or staff are prohibited and include, but are not limited to, the following.

Library users may not:

  1. Monopolize computers, space, or resources
  2. Use computers for inappropriate purposes, including pornography
  3. Use personal belongings to save a place at the computer stations
  4. *Create disturbances with disruptive noise, e.g., loud talking, audible electronic devices, snoring
  5. Exhibit any threatening or intimidating behaviors,e.g., abusive language, threats of violence or harassment
  6. Engage in behavior that is potentially unsafe or harmful, e.g., skateboarding, rollerblading, running, throwing objects, or bringing weapons into the library
  7. Engage in sexual activities, including sexual harassment and indecent exposure
  8. Leave children under the age of 13 unattended (see also Minors on Campus Guidelines)
  9. Be under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugsand/or other intoxicants
  10. Use alcohol, tobacco, e-cigarettes or other intoxicants while at the library. E-cigarettes put out an odor and a vapor, and some vapors contain nicotine. Alcohol may be served within the confines of permitted university events only.
  11. Disturb others with strong odors, e.g., perfumes, alcohol, or unsanitary personal conditions
  12. Neglect to wear appropriate clothing, such as shirts or footwear
  13. Sleep at the computers
  14. Deny access to materials through theft or deliberate misplacement
  15. Deface or damage library materials, equipment, or furniture
  16. Eat or use uncovered drink containers at the computers
  17. Vend, peddle, solicit, or petition
  18. Post or distribute materials without permission
  19. Bring animals, other than identified service animals, into the library
  20. **Leave personal belongings unattended
  21. Engage in any illegal acts or conduct in violation of federal, state, or local law, ordinance, or regulation

* Disruptive Noise

If your talking is disruptive to others, you may be asked to move to another area of the library or to the lobby. Group study rooms are also available for university students.

You are welcome to listen to music with headphones. If your music becomes disruptive to others, you will be asked to turn it down or off.

**Personal Belongings

Personal belongings left unattended will be moved to the lost and found at the Circulation Desk. Library employees reserve the right to refer unattended items of potential concern to campus police.

Sanctions for non-compliance:

Library users in violation of this Code of Conduct may be asked to present identification; may be subject to a search of backpacks or bags; may be directed to leave the premises and not return to any library facilities for the day; may be reported to the UniversityPolice Department; and/or may be trespassed from the Consortium Library or campus. Disciplinary or legal action may also be taken in accordance with applicable laws and policies.
