SHARON GAGNON. Papers; 1973-2004. 10.85 cu. ft. Inventory.
Sharon Gagnon received a bachelor's degree in French from Indiana University in 1962. She later earned masters (1965) and doctoral (1972) degrees in French Literature from Harvard University while pursuing a teaching career. She moved to Anchorage in 1970, teaching French at the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) as an adjunct faculty member until 1991. Gagnon has been active as a board or committee member for several Alaskan educational, cultural, scientific, and business organizations including the following: UAA Citizens Advisory Council (1976-1980), Anchorage Volunteer Service League (1980s), Anchorage Chamber of Commerce (1981-1983, 1991-1992), Alaska Repertory Theatre (1984-1988), Anchorage Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics (1987-1993), Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation (1991-1998), the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Public Advisory Group (1994-1996), and the Alyeska Pipeline President's Advisory Panel (1999-2001). She was also a member of the University of Alaska Board of Regents (1991-1998), serving for a term as its president. In 1985, Gagnon was honored for her service to UAA, when a lane leading to campus student housing was named after her.
The collection consists of the papers of Sharon Gagnon. The collection is divided into ten series: biographical materials; UAA Citizens Advisory Council (1976-1980); UAA Chancellors Search Committee (1978, 1981, 1993-1994); Anchorage Chamber of Commerce Education Committee (1981-1983); Ship Creek Steering Committee (1986); University of Alaska Board of Regents (1975-2002); Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation (1990-1998); Anchorage Organizing Committee for the Winter Olympics (1987-1989); videocassettes; Anchorage arts playbills, programs, and publications (1973-2003); Conference of Alaskans (2004); and miscellaneous materials. The board and committee membership records include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, budgets, agenda, surveys, policies, publications, and other relevant materials. The videocassettes concern: the Alaska-Siberia Medical Research Project (1987), the Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation (ca. 1991), the ribbon cutting ceremony for UAA student housing (1998), the Anchorage Museum of History and Art (1998), and the Alaskan Native Education Summit in Anchorage (2002).
The collection was presented to the archives by Sharon Gagnon in 2003. A letter of gift was signed in 2003. Additional materials were added in 2005.
