ANDREW HOPE AND ELLEN HOPE HAYS. Papers; 1947-1984. 18 cu. ft. Inventory.

Andrew P. Hope was born in Sitka, Alaska, in 1896. He studied carpentry at a trade school in Tacoma, Washington and obtained his high school diploma through correspondence school. He was one of the organizers of the Alaska Native Brotherhood and Sisterhood, and President of the Grand Camp of the Brotherhood for several terms. From 1945 to 1953 and from 1957 to 1963, Andrew Hope served in the Territorial House of Representatives. For twenty-six years (1940-1966), he served as the president of the Tlingit-Haida Association (Central Council of Tlingit-Haida). He was also active in community affairs, serving as director of the Salvation Army in Sitka for thirty years and was a member of the National Congress of American Indians. He died in Sitka in 1968. Ellen Hope Hays is the daughter of Andrew Hope and is active in native and public organizations.

The collection consists of papers relating to Andrew Hope and Ellen Hope Hays' activities in native and community organizations and affairs. The collection is divided into seventeen series. They are: correspondence and papers relating to the Central Council of Tlingit-Haida (CCTH) law suit; correspondence and papers relating to the CCTH; administrative papers and meeting minutes of the Institute of Alaska Native Arts; papers and publications of the Alaska Native Brotherhood/ Alaska Native Sisterhood; administrative papers of the Sealaska Corporation; meeting papers of the National Congress of American Indians; seminar reports, correspondence, notes and papers of the Brookings Institute; papers and board minutes from Rural Community Action Program; papers and documents concerning Southeastern Alaska Community Action Program; correspondence, reports, and papers concerning Sheldon Jackson college; correspondence and reports concerning Sitka and the Sitka Village Planning Council; correspondence and grant applications of the Alaska Humanities Forum; Board of Directors papers and publications of the Alaska Historical Commission; meeting minutes and papers of the State Historical Sites Advisory Committee; and publications concerning the Alaska Federation of Natives, RuralCAP, and various native issues.

The collection was presented to the UAA Archives and Manuscripts Department by Ellen Hope Hays in 1980. Additional materials are added periodically. A deed of gift was signed by Ellen Hope Hays in 1987.
