Captain John T. Smith was born in Switzerland in 1851. He came to America in 1860 and settled in Minnesota. He became involved in work on river steamboats and the captain of several different Mississippi boats. He worked for the Northern Navigation Company of Seattle (1907-1909). Captain Smith died in 1912.
This collection consists of a biographical sketch of Captain John T. Smith; an excerpt from a personal log of a trip of the steamboat Will H. Isom on the Yukon River between St. Michael and Weare in August and September of 1907; a photograph of the Will H. Isom; and a photograph, probably of Captain Smith.
The collection was deposited in the archives by the Alaska Historical Society in 1989.
