ANN AND ROBERT MOUNTEER. (Ak. Hist. Soc. Col.). Papers; 1901-1915, 1949-1966, 1995. 1.7 cu. ft.

Ann and Robert Mounteer were married in 1947. They both graduated with bachelor's degrees from Michigan State College in 1949; Ann Mounteer received her degree in geography while Robert Mounteer's field was forestry. The Mounteers homesteaded in Alaska in 1949. They traveled extensively in the territory and were involved in outdoor activities. The Mounteers built a house on a homestead on Fire Lake and a small cabin on a homestead on the bluffs above Homer. While in Alaska, Robert Mounteer worked for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management as a member of crews conducting soil analyses in the Glennallen area and a forestry survey in the Haines area. He also worked in the BLM's Forestry and Land Planning divisions. While in Alaska, the Mounteers took photographs, slides, and motion picture films which they included in movies, slide shows, and magazine articles. The Mounteers left Alaska in 1953.

The collection consists of papers relating Ann and Robert Mounteer's activities in Alaska including to travels in Alaska, homesteading in southcentral Alaska, and canoe trips in the Haines, Kachemak Bay, Lake Louise, Tyone River, and Tazlina Lake areas. The papers consist of Alaska trip journals, handwritten notes related to the slides, photographs, and motion picture film; an account by Ann Mounteer about their stay in Alaska, 1949-1953; magazine articles by Robert Mounteer on canoe and fishing trips in Alaska; and miscellaneous Alaska related items. The latter include correspondence, clippings, a floor plan of the Mounteers' Fire Lake house, and copies of the 1952 and 1953 editions of the Milepost. The collection also contains 275 color slides, 39 black and white photographs, 121 black and white negatives, 11 color transparencies, 22 post cards, 6800 feet of motion picture film, and 10 reference videocassettes and 5 MiniDV master tapes. The post cards are of early Knik; prospecting in the Broad Pass District; Nome; and the Matanuska Valley. General areas covered by the papers and visual materials include Anchorage, the Matanuska Valley, Fairbanks and the Tanana Valley, the Kenai Peninsula, the Glenn Highway, and the Richardson Highway.

The collection was presented to the Alaska Historical Society by Ann and Robert Mounteer in 1995. The collection was deposited in the archives in 1995.
