Organizational history:
The Alliance for Options in Education, established in 1973 as the Alliance for Open Education, was a citizens’ organization which supported the introduction of a flexible public school system that would offer diverse methods of education delivery at elementary and secondary levels. The organization was established to educate the public regarding possible alternatives within the public school system and to keep its membership informed of significant developments within the district. Membership was comprised of over 200 families from the Anchorage area.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the organization’s records. Included are correspondence, speeches, clippings, options existing in various Anchorage schools, newsletters, documents concerning the Anchorage School District, and other items.

Arrangement: Files are arranged alphabetically by subject.

Acquisition note: The collection was given to the Archives by Barbara Sweetland Smith in 1980. Mrs. Smith was chair of the organization in 1976.

Processing information: This collection was arranged and described in 1980. The guide was updated to current standard by Arlene Schmuland in 2017.
