BLACK ARTS ASSOCIATION. Records; 1972-1980. 3 cu. ft.

The Black Arts Association was organized in 1972 for the purpose of promoting the cultural, artistic, and social expansion of black people and the underprivileged. The activities of the association included producing plays, musicals, and other cultural events; and training black people and others in theater arts and other artistic fields. The association also operated the Mountain View Neighborhood Community Center. The Black Arts Association was closed down in 1979, because of financial problems.

The collection is divided into six series: Administrative Records, including the association's bylaws and constitution, and meeting minutes; Operations Records, including correspondence, contracts, grants, applications, and personnel; Financial Records, including audit records, financial statements, grants, payroll records, and disbursement records; Publications; Reference materials; and Photographs. The photograph series contains 143 b&w prints, 70 color prints, 23 b&w contact prints, 358 b&w 35mm negatives, 20 color 35mm negatives, and 50 b&w 120mm negatives.

The collection was presented to the archives by James Chase, the last president of the association. Additional materials were added in 1983.
