UNITED STATES. AIR FORCE. WHITE ALICE COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM. Plan of Operations, Cathedral and Rabbit Creek Site Plans; 1956-1961. 1.5 cu. ft.

The White Alice Communications System (WACS) was developed in the early 1950's as part of a North American over-the-pole defense system. The system was developed because of problems in using the VHF communications with the Aircraft Control and Warning System (AC&W). The Bell System recommended that the Department of Defense construct the forward propagation tropospheric scatter system, as well as less expensive microwave facilities. The Air Force accepted the plan and the Western Electric Company was awarded the contract in 1955. WACS linked the AC&W and the Distant Early Warning System (DEW-line) with Elmendorf and Eielson Air Force Bases (AFB) and also linked the Ballistic Missile Early Warning Site (BMEWS) at Clear AFB with the North American Defense Command. The systems eventually consisted of 71 separate facilities. Of the original 31 sites, 22 were tropospheric, six were microwave, and three were combined tropospheric/microwave sites. Construction began in the mid-1950's and was completed in 1959. BMEWS construction began in 1960 and was completed by 1962. Twenty-one sites were microwave and five were tropospheric. Project Stretchout facilities were tropospheric and functioned as part of an Aleutian DEW-line system. The Project Stretchout facilities were tropospheric and functioned as part of an Aleutian DEW-line system. Construction began in the late 1950's. The Rabbit Creek site was a microwave station and part of the original WACS network. Construction was begun in 1955 and the site opened in 1957. The Cathedral site was a microwave station in the BMEWS-Route B.

This collection is divided into three series. The first consists of a two volume work: The White Alice Network Plan of Operation, prepared by the Western Electric Corporation. The second is a set of 28 as-built drawings of the Cathedral BMEWS sites. The third is a set of three as-built drawings for the Rabbit Creek WACS site.

This collection was deposited in the archives in 1988 by G. Reynolds of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
