MILDRED STRATTON WILSON (1909-1973). Papers; 1925, 1934, 1936-1940, 1944-1981, 1987. 5.8 cu. ft.
Mildred Stratton was born to Clark and Ella (Bock) Stratton in Seaside, Oregon, on April 25, 1909. She graduated from Marysville High School in Marysville, Washington, in 1925, and then began her studies at Western Washington Teachers College in Bellingham, Washington, where she remained until 1927. She taught elementary school and junior high school in the Marysville school system from 1927 to 1934. Mildred Stratton married Charles Sawyer Wilson in San Anselmo, California, on June 25, 1934. She attended the University of California, Berkeley, and received her A.B. in 1938. She remained at Berkeley as a research assistant in invertebrate zoology until January 1940. The first of her many professional papers appeared in 1941. In 1944, she became an assistant curator in the division of marine invertebrates at the Smithsonian Institution. In 1946, she was appointed as a Research Associate of the Smithsonian Institution, a connection she retained for her entire career. Mildred S. Wilson moved to Alaska in 1948, and became a Consultant in Biology to the Arctic Health Research Center of the U.S. Public Health Service. She became an Associate in Marine Science at the University of Alaska in 1968 and was connected to the Institute of Marine Science. The focus of her research was on copepoda; her laboratory was in her home in Spenard, Alaska. She received several notable grants and fellowships in the course of her career and was the first Alaskan to receive a Guggenheim Fellowship (April 1955) and also the first Alaskan to receive a National Science Foundation grant (October 1955). The archives also holds the papers of her husband, Charles S. Wilson. Mildred S. Wilson died in 1973.
The collection contains the papers of Milldred Stratton Wilson. It is divided into ten series: personal papers; photographs; academic work; professional work; professional correspondence; professional organizations; writings and speeches by Mildred Stratton Wilson; notes, figures and drawings; writings citing or mentioning Mildred Stratton Wilson; and miscellaneous publications/reference raterial. Included are correspondence, financial records relating to grants, publications, drawings of copepods, photographs, annual reports of the Smithsonian Institution and the U.S. National Museum, and U.C. Berkeley course materials.
This collection was presented to the archives by Peter W. Hill in 1994. A deed of gift was signed in 1994. Additional materials were acquired from ENRI in 1996.

unsigned copy of her will, employment-related materials, personal
financial records, medical records, newspaper clippings, and
a pair of potholders decorated with a copepod design.

This series consists of photos of MSW's parents, MSW as a child
and an adult, and colleagues.

This series consists of MSW's high school yearbook from her senior
year; notes, exams, and other course-related materials from her
studies at U.C. Berkeley; and materials related to her initiation
into Phi Beta Kappa.

This series contains correspondence and financial records related
to MSW's research grants, records from the maintenance of her
laboratory library, annual reports from the Smithsonian Institution
and the U.S. National Museum, correspondence and catalogs related
to equipment, and a copepod sample in a small glass bottle.

This series consists primarily of correspondence with colleagues
on professional matters and the exchange of reprints. Also included
are letters of sympathy received by Charles S. Wilson after MSW's

This series consists of drafts and proofs of MSW's chapters in
