HOWARD R. FILER (d. 1987). Papers; 1937, 1940-1941, 1956. .25 cu. ft.

Howard Filer arrived in Alaska in August of 1940. He spent the following year working for the Property Division in the Quartermaster's Department of the United States Army. Filer assisted in the construction of military bases and airstrips in the Anchorage and Seward areas. The majority of his work was centered around Fort Richardson. Howard Filer left Alaska in 1941.

This collection contains correspondence relating to Mr. Filer's time in Alaska and traveling in Europe, photographs of Anchorage and surrounding areas, artifacts, and a videotaped interview with Filer.

Presented to the Archives by Katheryn J. Peters in 1998. A deed of gift was signed in 1988. Ms. Peters is Howard Filer's niece.

Series 1. Correspondence. 1937, 1940-1941.
This series contains correspondence between Howard Filer and several people including his mother, aunt, and Harry T. Miller. The majority of the letters are from Filer to his aunt Clara Pierce. The first two letters originated in 1937 while Filer was traveling in Europe. The remaining twenty letters were written by Filer and a woman named Willoughby (probably his wife) from Anchorage, Alaska. The later letters describe Filer's trip from Seattle to Anchorage and life in Alaska during the building of Fort Richardson. Filer discusses his domestic and social life, recreational activities, friends, neighbors, work, and the city of Anchorage during 1940-1941.
