HUGH ENYEART SMITH. World War II Letters; 1942-1943, 1946. .4 cu. ft.

Hugh Enyeart Smith was from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He served as a Seabee in the 13th Naval Construction Battalion from June 1942 to October 1943. While with the battalion, he was located at Camps Allen and Bradford in Norfolk, Virginia until August 1942, at which point the unit was transferred to Port Huenume, California and shortly thereafter to Dutch Harbor, Alaska. In September 1943, the unit was stationed at Camp Parks, California. In October 1943, Hugh Smith was transferred to the 89th Naval Construction Battalion at Camp Parks. From March to November 1944, he served with the Supply Depot at Camp Parks and the Commissary Depot (Nov.-Dec. 1944). Sometime later, he was attached to the 1058th Naval Construction Battalion Detachment, stationed at Barrow, Alaska until January 1946. His service with the Navy ended in February 1946.

The collection consists of 94 letters with envelopes from Hugh Enyeart Smith to his girlfriend, Jessie Hatter of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In the letters, he describes his leisure activities, such as attending movies and shows, his thoughts about military service, the people met, news from home, and his feelings for Jessie.

This collection was acquired by the Archives in 2003.
