GREGORY JOSEPH GIBBS. Alaska Pin Collection; 1967-2001. 1 cu. ft.
Greg Gibbs was born in Arcadia, California, in 1961. He moved to Alaska in 1986 to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage and to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. While a student, he held various positions in student government, including senator, vice-president, rules chair, and ombudsman. He held several part time jobs, but his most significant work related to his employment in the UAA Consortium Library. In that unit, he moved from being a part time student clerk working with the library’s electronic equipment and computers to being full time head of the library’s computer service unit. He married Robin Lee Baizel in 1994. They left Alaska in 2004 and moved to Reno, Nevada.
This collection primarily consists of Alaska related collector’s pins accumulated by Greg Gibbs while in Alaska. The collection is divided into six parts: 1) Fur Rendezvous buttons, 2) Alaska State Fair buttons, 3) buttons from other organizations, 4) Greg Gibbs’ bowling related pins, 5) price lists for collector’s pins, and 6) an “Alaska: Olympic Rings Human Flag” poster with instructions for participants. The collection contains 346 buttons of which 214 are unique items.
The collection was presented to the archives by Gregory Joseph Gibbs in 2004. A deed of gift was signed in 2004.
