HELEN F. ROGERS. Tourist Photograph Album; 1947. .35 cu. ft.

Helen F. Rogers was a young woman from Newport, Rhode Island, who toured the Pacific Coast of the United States, Western Canada and Alaska by rail, bus and steamship in the summer of 1947. She was accompanied on much of her trip by her friend, Bernice Whalen. Her trip included stops in Portland, Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver, Lake Louise, Banff National Park, Dawson Creek, Whitehorse, Burwash Landing, Mount McKinley National Park, Fairbanks, and Anchorage. Portions of her tour consisted of the following: a cruise from Seattle to Victoria aboard the S.S. Princess Kathleen; a ride on the Canadian Pacific Railway from Vancouver to Dawson Creek; a bus trip on the Alaska, Richardson and Glenn highways from Dawson Creek to Anchorage; and a ride on the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks.

The collection consists of the Canada and Alaska tourist photograph album of Helen F. Roger from 1947. The 63 page album contains: 109 original black and white prints; 90 black and white commercial tourist prints; 46 black and white and color-tinted photo post cards; two fold-out packets of post card views; two letters written by Helen to her family while traveling in the Canadian Rockies (Page 46); a booklet entitled, "General Information Concerning The Alaska Highway – Canadian Section (Northwest Highway System)"; a felt Victoria, B.C. pennant; and various newspaper and other clippings. Subjects of the original photographs include: the Government Locks in Seattle; the S.S. Princess Kathleen; Victoria, B.C.; Vancouver, B.C.; the Canadian Pacific Railway; Banff National Park; Dawson Creek, B.C.; the Alaska Highway; Whitehorse, Yukon Territory; the Richardson and Glenn highways; the Alaska Railroad; Mount McKinley National Park; and Ester Gold Mine near Fairbanks (dredge). The commercial tourist prints include scenes of the Columbia River Highway in Oregon; the Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother in Portland, Oregon; the Mission San Juan Capistrano in California; Stanford University; Washington; Seattle; Victoria; the Canadian Rockies; and Anchorage and scenes along the Alaska Railroad. The post cards include scenes of Washington, Oregon, California, Victoria, Vancouver, the Canadian Rockies, the Alaska Highway, Whitehorse, the Alaska Railroad, Mount McKinley National Park, Fairbanks, and Ester. The fold-out post card views include those of California Missions and the Canadian Rockies.  

The collection was presented to the archives by Cindy Pendleton in 2006.
