Biographical note:
Lucy Hon Cuddy was born in Waldron, Arkansas, and later lived in Fort Smith. She graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1911. After teaching school for five years, she moved to Valdez, Alaska, where she continued her teaching career. There she met Warren N. Cuddy (1886-1951), a lawyer from Washington; they were married in 1916. They had two sons, David Warren Cuddy (1919-1944) and Daniel Hon Cuddy (b. 1921). Warren Cuddy became prominent in legal and banking affairs and served in a number of significant positions including District Attorney, Territorial Attorney General, and President of the First National Bank of Alaska. Mrs. Cuddy was active in community affairs and also had been a school principal, a member of the Board of Regents of the University of Alaska, as well as Chairman of the Board of the First National Bank of Alaska.

Collection description:
The collection consists of biographical materials created by Lucy Cuddy. The first item is a copied one-volume, typescript and edited collection of reminiscences by Lucy Cuddy, circa 1979, including copies of newspaper clippings, and other materials concerning her early life in Arkansas, Valdez, and Anchorage. The second set of materials consists of Xerox copies of Lucy Cuddy’s daily diaries for many of the years between 1925 and 1946. In her diaries, she relates her daily activities, social events in Anchorage, family matters, the death of her son David in World War II, her trips to Arkansas with her husband, and other events.

Arrangement: The first item in the collection is the reminiscences, followed by the diary copies, which are in chronological order.

Rights note: Copyright to the materials has not been transferred to the Archives, but use of the materials by researchers was Mrs. Cuddy’s stated intent in giving the copies to UAA.

Acquisition note: Lucy Cuddy donated the reminiscences in 1979 and allowed the Archives to make copies of the diaries and include them in the collection in 1981.
