Biographical note:
Dixie West was a nurse from Kentucky who worked for a time at the Bishop Rowe General Hospital in Ketchikan. In 1945, she was the special supervisor of nurses at Louisville General Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the photograph album of Dixie West. The collection contains: a xerographic copy of the original 31-page photograph album, photographs and photo post cards from the album, and a photograph clipping from the Louisville Courier-Journal showing West holding an abandoned baby at Louisville General Hospital. Subjects of the photographs include: Dixie West, friends and family, Ketchikan area scenery, fellow medical staff at the Bishop Rowe Hospital in Ketchikan, the ship MS Hygiene at a Ketchikan dock, and two groups of nurses or nursing students. Subjects of the photo post cards include: Bishop Rowe General Hospital, a street scene of Wrangell, an aerial view of Wrangell, Chief Shakes Community House and Totems at Wrangell, Franklin Street in Juneau (all taken by photographer Otto Schallerer), and a color aerial view of Juneau.

Arrangement: Collection materials are arranged by document type. Photographs were rearranged by size.

Alternative formats: The collection includes a xerographic copy of the album indicating the original order of the materials. Copy negatives were made from selected photographs in the collection.
