Organizational history:
Revision of Alaska's criminal law began in 1975 when the Legislative Council, at the request of the State Legislature, established the Criminal Code Revision Commission. Originally composed of nine members representing various branches of state government and various state agencies, the Commission was later expanded to include representatives from the Anchorage Police Department, the Anchorage Bar Association, and the Public Defender Agency. Staff services for the Commission were provided by John Havelock, Sheila Gallagher, Barry Jeffery Stein, and Peter Ring of the Criminal Justice Center of the University of Alaska. John Havelock served as the Executive Director. The Commission presented a preliminary report to the legislature in early 1976. A tentative draft of the revised criminal code was completed in 1977.
