Biographical note:
Charles O. Farciot was born in Corgemont, Switzerland in 1840 and became a United States citizen in 1858. Farciot was an inventor, steamship engineer, and photographer. He operated photography studios in Arizona where he met Ed Schieffelin, a miner. Farciot came to Alaska in 1882 with a gold prospecting party from Arizona led by Schieffelin. Though the latter left in 1883, Farciot remained in Alaska working as a steamship engineer on the Yukon River until at least 1886. After leaving Alaska, Farciot started a photographic studio in San Francisco.

Collection description:
The collection consists of copied papers and photographs of Charles O. Farciot. The papers include biographical materials, historical articles concerning the Schieffelin prospecting trip, Farciot's Alaska photographs, and genealogical materials concerning the Farciot family. The photographs are photocopies of Farciot's original Alaska and Arizona albums (which contains 166 different images) and contact prints and negatives of the Alaska photographs and a selection of those taken in Arizona.

Series 2: Photographs; 1881-1884

Rights note: Archives does not own rights to this collection. Ken Graham, the donor of the materials, retains the rights to use photographs in this collection for commercial use. For duplication requests of images in the Alaska albums, please contact the Alaska State Library, Alaska Historical Collections.  The Alaska State Library owns an original copy of the Alaska album in their Wickersham State Historic Site photographs collection (ASL-PCA-277).

Processing information: This collection was described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 1997. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Mariecris Gatlabayan in 2011. The guide was revised by Veronica Denison in 2015.
