Biographical note:
Miss Ethel M. Shaw was a resident of Boston, Massachusetts. In 1937, she traveled with Misses Anita and Marion Atwood, to the western United States and Alaska. Miss Shaw’s trip began on July 1, in Boston and continued to Montreal, Canada, where she boarded the Canadian National Railroad Continental Limited and arrived in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 5. Her trip continued aboard the Canadian National Steamship Line SS Prince George and traveled to Skagway, Alaska. In Skagway, Miss Shaw traveled on the White Pass and Yukon Railroad to Carcross where she boarded the SS Tutshi for an excursion to Ben-My-Chree, Yukon Territory. After returning to the SS Prince George, she visited several Alaskan towns including Ketchikan, Wrangell, Sitka, and Juneau. Miss Shaw returned to Vancouver on July 14, where she boarded the Great Northern for a rail trip to Seattle and Portland. From Portland, she visited Los Angeles and San Francisco, before departing for Chicago aboard the Santa Fe Railroad’s Chief. She arrived in Chicago on July 25, and traveled home to Boston aboard the New York Central Railroad’s Twentieth Century Limited, arriving on July 26.

Collection description:
This collection consists of a 74 page scrapbook compiled by Miss Ethel M. Shaw concerning her trip to the western US, Alaska, and Canada, in July 1937, and her camera. Included in the album are 136 photographs and post cards depicting images of the cities and town she visited. These include Montreal, Vancouver, Carcross, and Ben-My-Chree, Canada; Ketchikan, Wrangell, Sitka, Juneau, and Skagway, Alaska; and Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago. Also included in the album is an extensive array of tourist brochures, pamphlets, advertisements, maps and plans (10), and timetables relating to historic sites, hotels, the Canadian National Steamship Line, the Canadian National Railroad, the Santa Fe Railroad, the New York Central Line, and TWA. The camera is an Eastman Kodak Number 2 Folding Hawk-Eye Model B. It is accompanied by a user manual and Miss Shaw’s name-embossed camera case.

Acquisition note: The scrapbook was purchased by the Archives on eBay in 2001. The camera was purchased on eBay in 2003.

Processing information: This collection was described by Kathleen Hertel in 2001. At that time, an account of the trip and several Cruise News newsletters were likely removed from the scrapbook and placed in a separate folder. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Gwen Sieja in 2015.
