Biographical note:
Dick Kastrup was from Lomita, California. He graduated from Narbonne High School, and worked in the trucking business before enlisting in the United States Army on January 20, 1941. During World War II, Kastrup was a sergeant in L Company, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division (Mechanized). His regiment fought Japanese forces on Attu and Kiska in the Aleutian Islands (May-June 1943), Kwajalein Island (January-February 1944), Leyte Island (October-December 1944), and Okinawa (April-June 1945).

Collection description:
The collection consists of the photograph album of infantry sergeant Dick H. Kastrup. The collection contains: a xerographic copy of the original 99 page photograph album; the original album covers and selected pages with mounted wartime newspaper clippings, color wartime patriotic stamps and stickers, and hand-made insignia; photographs; an Imperial Domain of Golden Dragon card certificate given to Kastrup while on the U.S.S. Windsor; and a small map of the Kwajalein or Menschikov Atoll, Marshall Islands. The clippings are from a local Lomita, California newspaper, and concern Kastrup’s wartime communications with his parents, and Japanese battle souvenirs he sent home to them. Locations of the photographs include Attu and Kiska islands in Alaska, and Kwajalein Island. Subjects of the photographs include fellow soldiers, troop encampments, battle weapons and positions, island landscapes, battlefield wreckage, South Pacific islanders, Japanese war dead, snapshots taken by Japanese soldiers, scenes aboard troop transport ships, wartime newspaper headlines, and a division parade or review ceremony.

Alternative formats: The collection contains a xerographic copy of the album indicating the original order of the materials. Copy negatives were made from selected prints in the collection.

Processing information: The photograph album was dismantled, photographs amd papers removed from the album and rearranged by size, and the collection described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2002. The collection was converted to current standard by Veronica Denison in 2015.
