Biographical note:
Earl George Goodwin was an officer in the United States Air Force (USAF). He served in the armed forces during World War II. Goodwin was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base (AFB) from 1951 to 1954. He was a captain and then major with the 5039th Air Transport Group. While at Elmendorf, Goodwin was officer-in-charge of the 5039th’s Instrument and Transition School (1951-1952), and then operations staff officer in the J-3 Division, Headquarters, Alaska Air Command. He later attained the rank of colonel. Edwin G. Goodwin died in Hardlingen, Texas, in 1973.

Collection description:
The collection consists of photocopied papers and original photographs of USAF officer Earl George Goodwin. The copied papers include: a page from Goodwin’s funeral program from 1973; his officer effectiveness reports from service at Elmendorf AFB for the periods of October 1951 to June 1952, and January to December of 1953 (four different); and a listing of his military awards and decorations. There are 16 black and white prints, 11 color prints, 3 black and white photo post cards, and 8 black and white copy negatives. The photographs are from Goodwin’s service in Alaska. Their subjects include: a military ceremony at an air force base; the civilian men’s and women’s Quonset huts on Elmendorf AFB; fellow officers and co-workers at Elmendorf; the Alaska Air Command Headquarters building at 12:40 A.M., July 9, 1953; muktuk eating and beauty contests in Kotzebue, July 4, 1952; unidentified air force buildings; and scenery. Subjects of the photo post cards include: an aerial view of Kotzebue and its landing strip; a seal poke in Nome; Mount McKinley; an Alaskan sunset; and an aerial view of Anchorage.
