While a resident of Cordova, Taylor was a fireman and locomotive engineer with the Copper River and Northwestern Railway from 1910-1922, though from 1917-1919, he served in the U. S. Taylor later also represented Kodiak (1945-1947) and Fairbanks (1949-1951, 1955-1967) in the Alaska Legislature. He also served on the Alaska Statehood Commission (1949-1959), was a delegate from Fairbanks to the Alaska Constitutional Convention (1955-1956), and ran for governor in 1962.
