Collection description:
The collection contains three letters from Annah H. Mullikin in Sitka to Magdeline Newman in Cowesett, Rhode Island. In the first letter, dated July 21, 1904, Mullikin discusses children, gifts, weather, health, prices of commodities, the Episcopal Church (St. Peters by-the-Sea), and the missionary activities of Bishop Peter Trimble Rowe and others. An attached news clipping from a church magazine describes Bishop Rowe having set up a chapel for the soldiers at Fort Gibbon, traveling to Fairbanks from Circle City, making arrangements for a mission and hospital in Fairbanks, and returning to Southeast Alaska. In the second letter, dated January 19, 1905, Mullikin thanks Newman for sending a Christmas present for Annah’s baby girl. She also instructs her on sending a donation for the church to Bishop Rowe, who is returning from a trip to the east. The third letter, undated but probably written in 1905, thanks Newman for sending a gift for her baby. Mullikin also mentions hardships at the mission and hospital in Fairbanks, the influx of miners, and the need for donations for food and supplies.
