Organizational history:
George Turner and Ira F. Wood were business partners who ran a general store in the mining town of Flat, Alaska. George Turner was a fur trader and Ira Wood was a river boat operator who hauled freight. The partners operated general stores in Shageluk, Holiakachuk, and Holy Cross. They purchased their store in Flat from Manuel Gularte in about 1924, becoming the primary competitors to the Donnelley and Sheppard Store there. Turner and Wood also operated two warehouses and a hotel in Flat.
Collection description:
The collection consists of a receipt book for Turner and Wood General Merchandise in Flat, Alaska, from April 1931. The receipts are for groceries and other merchandise and include the names of the store’s customers.
