Agnes Mary McQuarrie was born in 1916. She attended Reed College, received a master’s degree from the State College of Washington in 1941 and a doctoral degree from Indiana University in 1963. McQuarrie later became a professor at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, researching in the fields of public education and recreation. Ruth Elizabeth Warnke was born in 1911. She attended Oregon State Agricultural College, where she received a master’s degree in 1934. In the summer of 1966, the two friends went on a tour of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Ruth Warnke died in Pullman, Washington in 1995.
The collection consists of 235 tourist color slides of Agnes McQuarrie and Ruth Warnke. Subjects include the Inside Passage, the Alaska ferries Tustamena and Malaspina, Sitka, Juneau, Haines, Skagway, Fairbanks, Barrow, the Eskimo Olympics and riverboat Discovery in Fairbanks. Yukon Territory sites and subjects include Dawson City, Whitehorse, White Pass and Yukon Route Railway, a riverboat tour from Whitehorse to Dawson City.
