Collection summary: Photographs taken by a U.S. Coast Guard serviceman serving on a buoy tender in the Aleutians and along the western Alaska coast.

Biographical note:
Lawrence J. (Larry) Eastman served aboard the U.S. Coast Guard buoy tender Bittersweet in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Collection description:
The collection consists of three photograph albums of black and white prints. Most photographs were taken by Larry Eastman while aboard the Bittersweet, a Coast Guard buoy tender homeported at Kodiak, Alaska.  Subjects of the images include fellow servicemen, ships, ports, scenery, and work duties.

Arrangement: The albums are maintained in their original order.  Some loose sheets broken off from pages follow the albums.

Digitized copies: Digital copies of most of the photographs (with the exception of purchased commercial photographs) have been digitized and placed online in the Alaska’s Digital Archives. For information about obtaining digital copies, please contact Archives and Special Collections.

Custodial history: In 2005, Larry Eastman gave the albums to his fellow Bittersweet veteran, Dave Bouker of Dillingham, Alaska.

Acquisition note: Dave Bouker gave the albums to Archives and Special Collections in 2009.
