Organizational history:
In 1977, the Alaska Gay Community Center (AGCC) was incorporated as a nonprofit organization.  Throughout the years, the organization has changed gone through a series of name changes. In 1982, the organization decided to change its name to the Alaska Gay and Lesbian Community Center (AGLCC). In an attempt to update the State of Alaska on the name change, the organization discovered that they were no longer a legal non-profit entity. In May of 1982 they were involuntarily dissolved. In August 1982, they were incorporated as the Alaska Gay and Lesbian Resource Center (AGLRC). On September 12, 1983, the general membership approved the name change to Identity: The Center for Sexual Minorities, Inc., and their new Articles of Incorporation and bylaws. The organization is currently named Identity, Inc.

AGCC was developed to provide programs supporting the equality for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender community and its allies. As AGCC evolved into Identity Inc., the organization has sustained and expanded their activities. Examples of these programs and services include a helpline; a center for the GLBTA community; the Names Project Quilt; Pride Conference that features national speakers, workshops, and socials; Anchorage PrideFest; and, the publication of newsletters, such as the NorthView.

Collection description:
The collection contains Board of Directors’ records, Names Project Quilt Anchorage records, Pride Conference records, PrideFest records, financial documents. The types of records that can be found in these records are meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, flyers, conference programs, conference planning documents, newsletters, reports, photographs, audio recordings, and awards.

Separated materials:
Materials related to Klondyke Kontact, a newsletter by and for Lesbians in Alaska, were removed and put into a separate collection: Klondyke Kontact records (HMC-1322).

Posters related to the Anchorage chapter of PFLAG were removed from the collection and added to the Archives’ Ephemera collections.

Acquisition note: The collection was presented to the Archives and a deposit agreement was signed in 2013. Additional materials were added in 2015 and 2018.

Processing information: This collection was described by Mariecris Gatlabayan in 2013. A majority of the collection came to the archives in binders. Materials were placed in acid free folders and retain the order in which they were arranged in the binders. Additions were added to the collection by Veronica Denison in 2016 and Gwen Higgins in 2019.
