COLLECTIONS CONTAINING ARTIFACTS
The following list identifies the major artifact holdings of the UAA Archives and Special Collections Department. The list contains modified collection descriptions developed from a variety of key word searches of the Collections List. These key words include: artifact, award, plaque, button, and pin. The heading for each entry is the same as that found in the Collections List and in the collection description. The text of the description has been modified to provide specific information on artifacts contained in the collection. Detailed lists of the artifacts are to be found in the inventories attached to the collection description.
The following lists include collections which are substantially processed and available for research use. Future additions will be made after the materials are processed or when discrete items, unlisted in inventories, are located. The university records series containing artifacts will be included in the future.
C. EARL ALBRECHT (1905-1997); Papers; 1905-1997. 11 cu.
ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers and publications documenting Dr. Albrecht's
career in medicine and public health administration, primarily in Alaska. Series
4 contains 1 sweepstakes ribbon from the Matanuska Valley Fair Association,
and a set of Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation coins or "Bingles" minted
for the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Matanuska Colony.
ALASKA BLACK CAUCUS, INCORPORATED. Records; 1975-1993. 12.45

This collection contains the records of the Alaska Black Caucus. Series 6 of
this collection contains 8 award plaques for Business Participation Award Recipients,
Caucus Living Room Charter Members; Community Service Award Recipients; Media
Service Award Recipients; Outstanding Youth Award Recipients; Pioneer Alaskans;
Political Awareness Award Recipients; and President's Award Recipients. Series
15 contains 5 buttons and 1cardboard desk name plate.
ALASKA PRESS WOMEN. Records; 1961-1992. 6.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
Artifacts in the Records of the Alaska Press Women are located in Series 9
and include 6 items: "Alaska Press Women" 3 T-shirts, a banner,
a lapel pin, and an award necklace.
ALASKAN OF THE YEAR, INC. Records; 1979-2003. 3.4
cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the records of the Alaskan of the Year, Inc., honoring
Alaskans who significantly affected the character and development of the state.
Series 8 consists of two award plaques for the Alaskan of the Year and the
Governor's Award winners.
ANCHORAGE AREA CHARTER COMMISSION, 1970-1971. Records; 1969-1971. 5
cu. ft. Inventory.
The Anchorage Area Charter Commission was formed in 1969 to write a charter
providing for the unification of the governments of the City of Anchorage and
the Greater Anchorage Area Borough into the Municipality of Anchorage. The
collection consists of the operating records of the Anchorage Area Charter
Commission. Section One, Series 6, Publicity, contains 25 stickers and 18 buttons
promoting the "One People" project sponsored by the Commission.
ANCHORAGE GARDEN CLUB. Records; n.d., 1942, 1953-1994. 9.25
cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the records and scrapbooks of the Anchorage
Garden Club. The scrapbooks include numerous ribbons and decor samples from
various Garden Club functions.
ANCHORAGE SKI CLUB. Records; 1937-1966. .55 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records relating to the administration, membership,
and activities of the Anchorage Ski Club. Series 8 in the collection contains
3 ski patches; they relate to the Anchorage Ski Club; Anchorage, Alaska; and
National Ski Patrol.
ANCHORAGE SYMPHONY LEAGUE. Records; 1946-1992. 12 cu.
ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the records of the Anchorage Symphony League. Series
9 and 10 of this collection 10 artifacts: 5 buttons from the symphony docent
program and 3 from the Young People's Concert; 1 prop champagne glass; and
1 sterling silver charm given as a gift to board members.
ANONYMOUS JAPANESE SAILOR. World War II Photographs and Cigarette
Packet; ca. 1942-1945. .1 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the photographs and cigarette packet of an
anonymous Japanese sailor who served in the Aleutians. The collection contains
a Japanese cigarette packet. The packet is green with an eagle on the front,
and contains ten cigarettes in their original wrapping.
THE ARC OF ANCHORAGE, INCORPORATED (ARCA). Records; 1957-2000. 10.7

This collection contains the records of the ARC of Anchorage, Incorporated.
Series 19 of this collection contains a PARCA corporate seal embosser from
1958; a glass mug and cloth banner from ARCA's fortieth anniversary celebration
in 1997; a Key Campaign button and 3 pins from 1997; and Margaret Lowe's name
badge, button, and pin from the The Arc National Convention in Birmingham,
Alabama in 2000.
THEODORE P. BANK, II (1923-1981). Papers; 1901, 1917-1980. 11.9
cu. ft. Inventory.
Ted Bank was an explorer/anthropologist who worked in the Aleutians and Japan.
Series 26 of this collection includes 28 items including Aleutian grass baskets,
Ainu and Japanese items, and several unidentified artifacts.
EDWIN G. BEU, JR. Alaska Home Movie and Camera; 1958-1959. .85
cu. ft.
The collection consists of the edited Alaska home movie production and related
moving picture camera of an Anchorage resident. The collection contains a Revere
16mm Model 103 hand-held moving picture camera, used to take the film footage.
WILLIAM K. BOARDMAN (1915-1993). Papers; ca. 1940-1985. 19.2
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the personal and business papers of a former
speaker of the house in the Alaska Legislature. Series I, Subseries M, contains
19 artifacts including two fountain pens; unidentified medals; identification
cards for Alaska House Majority and Minority Leader, the US Armed Forces, and
a United Airlines Mile Club; Club and political pins; identification cards;
Alaska Purchase Centennial patches; two black and gold political ties; and
a Speaker of the House name tag.
LOUIS A. CAMPI. World War II Photograph Album and Scrapbook; 1941-1945,
1951-1952. .5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers, service patches, and photographs of
a member of the Service Company, 53rd Infantry Regiment, at Adak. The service
patches include shoulder patches for the Alaska Department, the Fourth Army,
Replacement and School Command, Army Ground Forces, and the Kiska Task Force,
as well as overseas service bars, a service stripe, and staff sergeant rank
insignia.
COMMUNITY COLLEGE COALITION OF ALASKA. Records; 1986-1988. 2
cu. ft. Inventory.
The coalition was formed in 1986 in response to the decision of the president
of the University of Alaska to eliminate the state's community college system
because of budgetary constraints. This collection consists of the operation
records of the coalition. Included are organization files, minutes, subject
files, treasurer's records, and other papers. Series 4 includes 7 buttons:
6 "Save YOUR Community Colleges" and 1 "I Love Community Colleges".
LEVI WHITNER COOK (1914-1996). World War II Photographs and Papers;
n.d., 1938, 1942-1944, 1961. .2 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the photographs and papers of a soldier in
the 102nd Signal Radio Intellegence Company, stationed at Fort Richardson in
Anchorage. The collection contains: Cook's chauffeur's license issued in 1938;
his local draft board's notice of classification; a notice card announcing
his safe arrival at Fort Richardson; company Thanksgiving menus for 1942 and
1943; an illustrated Christmas Card from Fort Richardson; a luggage tag; Alaska
Department and Fourth Service Command shoulder patches; private first class
rank insignia patches; overseas service bar patches; good conduct, Asiatic-Pacific,
and American Campaign service ribbon bars; Army Signal Corps and infantry brass
buttons; brass belt buckles; a watch fob and chain; uniform buttons; a State
of Utah sales tax token; a Tacoma, Washington fare token; a five centavo Mexican
coin; and a small denomination Japanese coin.
JENNIE M. CORNELL (1908-1991). Alaska Memorabilia; 1894-1985. .2
cu. ft.
The collection consists of a collection of Alaska memorabilia from the
Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition of 1909, and other related Alaska historical
events. The collection contains: a Utah exhibit copper coin (1909); a small
pin ("A.Y.P. Seattle"); a commemorative bronze coin from the Pioneer
Memorial Park in Fairbanks (1967); two 1959 souvenir Alaska birthday year souvenir
dollars; two 1962 Alaska Boosters Association souvenir dollars; a cloth handkerchief
with an embroidered map of Alaska; and a packet of Alaskan wildflower seeds
from the Baldwin Seed Co. of Alaska.
FREDERICK JOHN DATE (d. 1956). Papers and Photographs; 1899-1956,
1976. 1.25 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers and photographs of a miner, Alaska Road
Commission employee, and railroad man. Series 4 contains five artifacts including
a compass; a small, French made, brass instrument; goggles; 2 license plates
; and an instrument case containing 2 tweezers, 1 scissors, 3 picks, 1 scalpel
type knife, 1 water dropper, and 1 ruler.
WALTER W. CUMMINGS (1922-2000). World War II Photograph Album, Papers and Memorabilia; 1939-1945. .5 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the album, papers and memorabilia items of a U. S. Army Air Forces soldier who served at Fort Mears in Dutch Harbor. The collection contains: 39 shoulder patches; five Army Air Forces specialist sleeve insignia patches; nine honorable discharge emblems; rank (private) and overseas service bars patches; an Army Good Conduct Medal; a color illustrated Alaska cloth pillow cover with fringe; various service ribbons, buttons, and pins; two bullet shells; and a piece of metal shrapnel.
LAWRENCE AND OLGA DOHENY FAMILY. Papers; 1917-1980. 21.85
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection consists of the papers of the family of Lawrence and Olga
Doheny, an Alaskan mining family. Part 7, Artifacts, contains Lawrence Doheny's
surveying and drafting tools; a group of family memorabilia including tickets,
stamps, ribbons, pins, medals, and patches; and two metal children's toys found
in the family's former home in Anchorage.
BENZIE OLA "RUSTY" DOW (1894-1989). Papers; ca. 1910-1989. 4.2
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers and photographs of an Alaskan artist and
truck driver, Rusty Dow. Series 15 contains 1 blackjack which Rusty used for
protection during trips on the Alcan, and 1 pair of Pince-nez glasses,.
RUSSELL W. DOW (1915-1992). Papers; 1917-1992. 18.5 cu.
ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers and photographs of Alaska photographer
Russell Dow. Series 23 of the Russ Dow collection consists
of 2 framed award certificates from the Anchorage Ski Club for a ski meet in
1940, 1 Anchorage Ski Club ribbon, 1 rubber stamp for photographs, 1 library
embosser, 1 Kodak Recomar No. 33 camera (ca. 1939), 1 back to a Zeiss
Ikon 668/9 camera, and 1 pair of Carl Zeiss binoculars (ca. 1917).
KARL F. EID (b. 1909). Papers; 1937-1998. 1.75 cu. ft.
Inventory.
The collection consists of papers documenting Eid's professional culinary
career and those documenting skiing and ski jumping in the Anchorage area.
Series 3 of this collection includes 2 patches, 1 pin, and 1 medal from the
Alaska Ski Jumping Club; and 1 patch from the Arctic Valley Ski Club.
RAYMOND F. FARWELL, JR. (b. 1918). Naval Reserve Officer's Papers; 1941-1959, 1965. 2 cu. ft. Map List.
The collection consists of the military papers of a U. S. Naval Reserve officer who served in Alaskan waters during World War II. The collection contains a World War II U. S. Navy Officer's Hat with bullion cap ornament.
FRED WILDON FICKETT (1857-1928). Papers; 1877-1906. 3.5
cu. ft. Published guide.
Fred Fickett was a member of the U.S. Army exploratory expedition to the Alaskan
interior in 1885. This collection contains 4 artifacts. The 4 artifacts are
1) a beaded Athabascan jacket, 2) a pipe, 3) a jar containing matches wrapped
in oiled paper, and 4) a silk handkerchief from Nellie Lord which was used
as a flag on part of the expedition.
HOWARD R. FILER (d. 1987). Papers; 1937, 1940-1941, 1956. .25
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of a construction worker for the U.S.
Army in Alaska during World War II. Series 3 includes 2 buttons, one from "11,
U. S. Army Engineers, Ft. Richardson," and one from the "Alaska Dog
Derby and Ice Carnival, Fairbanks." Both buttons date to 1941.
GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS OF ALASKA. Records; 1934-2001. 9 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the records of a state women's volunteer service organization. Artifacts in series 8 include an embosser, rubber stamp, and metal button for support of the construction of a museum in the town of Haines.
OTTO K. GRALERT. World War II Scrapbook; 1942-1945. .5
cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers, artifacts, and photographs taken from
the World War II era scrapbook of medical personnel clerk with the 179 th Station
Hospital at Adak. Artifacts with the papers include a dog tag, an Alaska District
shoulder patch, a Technician Fourth Class rank insignia patch, a service stripe,
and overseas service bars.
GREATER ANCHORAGE, INC. FUR RENDEZVOUS. Records; 1938-1939, 1947-1986. 13
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection the records of Greater Anchorage, Incorporated, which supervised
the annual Fur Rendezvous in Anchorage, Alaska. Part III of this collection
contains an album of 43 autographed commemorative covers (1970-1983); a set
of 14 Booster Buttons (n.d., 1974-1986); an incomplete set of 21 Collector
Buttons (n.d., 1965-1984); 10 commemorative plates; and 2 commemorative mugs.
JAY S. HAMMOND. Papers; 1946-1993. 10 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of Jay Hammond, Alaskan political figure,
legislator, and governor. Series 7 of this collection contains 3 campaign
buttons from Hammond's 1978 campaign for Governor of Alaska.
CHRISTINE A. HELLER (1907-1990). Papers; n.d., 1895, 1902, 1905, 1907,
1909-1910, 1916, 1920, 1924-1977, 1980-1982. 26.67 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists primarily of materials relating to Christine Heller's
professional work as a nutritionist and to her work in botany. Series 6 includes
botanical specimens (8.6 cu. ft. - at least 4200 items), which consist of partially-identified,
dried, pressed Alaskan specimens collected by Christine Heller.
DAVID M. HICKOK (b. 1924). Papers; n.d., 1923, 1933, 1939-1940, 1952,
1955-1956, 1958-1959, 1962-1990, 1992. 15.2 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists primarily of papers related to David M. Hickok's
professional work with the Federal Field Committee, the Sea Grant Program,
and the Arctic Environmental Information and Data Center (AEIDC). Series 13,
Miscellaneous Items, includes 3 conference name badges.
MICHAEL HOOD. Papers; 1976-1990. 5 cu. ft. Inventory.
Papers of a UAA faculty member and head of the Theater Department. The
collection contains artifacts relating to various productions and includes
6 sweatshirts and 1 executioner's hood.
JAMES B. HOXIE (1908-1971). World War II Photograph Album; 1944-1945. .6
cu. ft.
The collection consists of the album of a U. S. Army Signal Corps soldier who
served in Seward and Fairbanks. The album contains: color shoulder patches
for the Alaska Defense Command (red, white, blue, orange, yellow and black)
and the Army Service Forces (red, white and blue) and a shoe cleaning cloth
or sack from the Curry Hotel of the Alaska Railroad.
MEL KALKOWSKI (b. 1947). Papers; 1975-1985. 2.2 cu. ft.
Inventory.
Miscellaneous papers of a UAA staff member involved in public relations. Series
5 of this collection contains 2 Fur Rondy Official's jackets, one light blue,
and one dark blue.
CARL F. LEWIS. Photographs and Artifacts; 1916, 1917, 1919-1922, ca.
1950. .2 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the photographs, post cards, artifacts, and
company party invitation of a Company G, 21st Infantry Regiment soldier soldier
who served at Fort Gibbon, Alaska. The collection contains Carl F. Lewis' dog
tag and attached ribbon; two bronze U. S. buttons; one bronze American Eagle
button; one bronze round American Eagle pin; and one marksman rifle qualification
pin.
ALICE "DOVE" MONTGOMERY KULL (1897-1991). Papers; 1924-1991. 13.25
cu. ft. Inventory.
Dove Kull was a social worker and activist on behalf of child welfare and senior
citizen's issues. Series 12 of this collection 37 items including 2 hand painted
cards, 4 buttons concerning women's issues and women's conferences, and 31
souvenirs of Dove Kull's trip to China in 1982.
TERRY MARTIN (b.1936). Papers; 1978-1989. 15 cu. ft.
Inventory.
The collection consists of papers relating to Terry Martin's activities
as a State Representative. Series 23, Miscellaneous Materials includes 2 different
Legislative name tag pins; 1 "Alaska '88 name plate; and 2 Issue buttons
relating to "HJR 5, Freedom of Conscience, Let the People Decide!," and
1 "University of Alaska, Stop the Drop in '98!"
ALAN G. MAY (1895-1993). Papers; 1902-1990. 10.6 cu.
ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the papers of amateur archeologist Alan May. Series
11 contains regimental insignia, shoulder pips, and uniform buttons from May's
service in World War II.
JUDITH AND MALCOLM McDONALD. Papers; 1960-1966, 1987-1988, 1996-1997. 1.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the Alaska related papers of a couple who taught in Anchorage schools in the 1960s. The artifacts in the collection include: an Alaska Native straw basket, a pair of seal and otter skin booties, three bone fishing weights, and a yo-yo.
MRS. JOHN F. MERCER. Nome Trip Scrapbook; 1898-1904. .2
cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the contents of Mrs. John F. Mercer's original
scrapbook of items, primarily concerning she and her husband's trip to Nome
from 1900 to 1901. The scrapbook contains 3 artifacts: 1 buckskin ribbon from
the First Nome Stampede, Nome Camp #9, Arctic Brotherhood, April 15, 1901;
1 ribbon, Memorial Day, Nome, Alaska, May 1901; and 1 ribbon, 4th of July,
Nome 1901, Sports Committee.
MARGARET G. MIELKE (1912-1980). Papers; n.d., 1942-1980. 5.5
cu. ft.
The collection contains papers relating to Margaret Mielke's work as an
author and a poet. Series 5 includes 1 corsage from the Alaska State Council
of the Arts, 1970 meeting.
SALLY MONSERUD (1907-1991). Papers; 1954-1983. 1.3 cu.
ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of Sally Monserud, faculty member at ACC
and UAA. There are 5 artifacts listed in Series 5 of the collection: her academic
robes and hoods for her masters and honorary degrees, plus a pair of eyeglasses.

LOIS MOREY. Papers and Artifacts; n.d., 1897- 1917, 1941, 1950. 5
cu. ft. Inventory.
Lois Morey was the Educational Supervisor for the Alaska Territorial Department
of Education (later the State Department of Education) for ten years during
which time she traveled extensively to rural schools and communities. Series
Three of the Morey Collection contains 21 native, Russian, and American period
artifacts. The native related materials a seal oil lamp, a Tlinket hat, a bird
spear, two speakers staves, two dance padels, two wooden food bowls, and a
house post. The Russian related materials include a copper teapot, a vodka
cup, a pair of scissors, an adze, a copper pot with lid, and a section of copper
from a church roof. The American period artifacts are an Alaska Commercial
plate, a steamboat lantern, a gold scale, hand cuffs, and a padlock.
GEORGE B. NELSON (1889-1980). Papers; 1908-1979. 3 cu.
ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of George Nelson, Alaskan guide, miner,
and longshoreman. Series 6 contains 6 artifacts. These are 1 Army comb and
mirror set; 1 Army pocket signal disk; a Kodak outdoor filter guide; a USMC
postcard stitched insignia; and an Alaska Week pin.
FRANK PAULS (1914-2001). Papers; 1909-1998. 5.5 cu. ft.
Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of Dr. Frank Pauls, a public health microbiologist
and administrator in Alaska. Series 15 consists of four different lapel pins,
the subjects of which include the alumni association of the School of Pubic
Health at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the Alaska Red Cross,
and the eighth and tenth International Congresses on Circumpolar Health, held
in 1990 and 1996.
ALMER J. PETERSON (1890-1962). Papers; 1935-1937, 1946, 1948. .25
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers and photographs of Almer J. Peterson, attorney
and early resident of the Matanuska Colony. Series 3 consists of 3 items (2
blotters and a pencil) from Peterson's political campaigns in 1946 and 1948.
CHARLES HENRY ROSENTHAL (1930-2003). Papers; 1969, 1972, 2002-2003. .2
cu. ft.
The collection consists of the papers, photographs, article, and lighter of
a press officer, primarily relating to the oil tanker S. S. Manhattan.
The collection contains a Zippo lighter for "Humble's Maiden Northwest
Passage Voyage, S. S. Manhattan 1969."
JOSEPH AND LISA RUDD. Papers; ca. 1908, 1943-1984. 27
cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the personal and business papers of Joseph Rudd; and
personal and political papers of Lisa Rudd. Part I, Series 1 of the Lisa Rudd
Papers contains miscellaneous materials including 3 artifacts: a small bottle
of crude oil from Cook Inlet, a sample of bormite from Kennicott Mine, and
Joseph Rudd's notary public seal.
ETHEL M. SHAW. Scrapbook and Camera; 1937. .5 cu. ft.
This collection contains a scrapbook compiled by Miss Shaw while on a trip
through the western United States and Alaska. The collection also contains
Miss Shaw's camera: an Eastman Kodak Number 2 Folding Hawk-Eye Model B, accompanied
by the user manual and Miss Shaw's name-embossed camera case.
LORENA SHOWERS (1905-1997). Papers; 1945-1997. 9 cu.
ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of Lorena showers, union organizer and
author. Series 5 of this collection contains 6 award plaques presented to Lorena
Showers for service to various groups and committees. Series 8 contains 33
pins and badges presented to Lorena Showers for participation in and service
to various organizations. Items include delegate badges for HERE and AFL-CIO
conventions, pins denoting service and membership in senior citizens' groups,
and items denoting her political activities.
ARTHUR O. TROSVIK. Papers; 1939-1946, 1953. .85 cu. ft.
Inventory.
This collection contains the papers of Arthur O. Trosvik, concerning his military
service in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and the Alaska Communication System during
World War II. Series 7, Military Service Medals, Ribbons, and Pins, consists
of a good conduct medal, a U.S. brass pin, a signal corps brass pin, a marksman
riflery medal, a pair of U.S.A. with attached sergeant's insignia pins, 6 service
ribbons on 4 pins, and a service ribbon tie tack.
JAMES F. VACHON. Military Service Papers; 1955-1958. .1
cu. ft.
The collection consists of various papers of a U. S. Army soldier who served
in the 813th Engineer Battalion (Heavy Construction) at Elmendorf Air Force
Base in Anchorage. The collection contains two 6th Armored Corps shoulder patches.
MILDRED STRATTON WILSON (1909-1973). Papers; 1925, 1934, 1936-1940,
1944-1981, 1987. 5.8 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contains the papers of Milldred Stratton Wilson, Alaska marine
biologist. Series 1 includes 1 pair of pot holders with images of copepods
sewn onto them. Series 4 includes 1 copepod specimen in a bottle, labeled "Findley
Lake, August 1972."
BETZI AND LYMAN WOODMAN. Papers; 1914-1989. 14 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers and reference materials of free lance writers,
Betzi and Lyman Woodman. Series XI of the Woodman Papers contains 1artifact,
a banner used during the Bicentennial celebration in Anchorage.
