COLLECTIONS CONTAINING MOVING IMAGES

The following list identifies the main holdings of the UAA Archives and Special Collections Department in the area of moving images. The list contains modified collection descriptions developed from a key word search of the collections descriptions. The primary key words were motion pictures, film, video, and VHS. The heading for each entry is the same as that found in the Collections List and in the collection description. The text of the description has been modified to provide specific information on the moving images in the collection. Detailed lists of these materials are to be found in the inventories attached to the collection descriptions. Those portions of the inventories which relate to moving images will be attached to these abbreviated descriptions at some point in the future.

The following list includes collections which are substantially processed and available for research use. Future additions will be made after the materials are processed or when discrete items, unlisted in inventories, are located. Those university records series, which contain moving images, will be also be included in the future. Modifications in the count will take place from time to time for the sake of uniformity and in order to arrive at a more specific count.

"ALASKA AT WAR" PROJECT. Records; 1941-1987. 5.75 cu. ft. Inventory. Folder level control.
This collection consists of material gathered by Aurora Films for the production of the World War II documentary film, "Alaska at War." Series 2 consists of 4 videocassettes (3/4 inch) of a rough cut and master tape of "Alaska at War." Series 6 consists of 226 reels of 16mm motion picture film (60,000+ feet) acquired from different sources for the project.

ALASKA BLACK CAUCUS, INC. Records; 1975-1993. 12.45 cu. ft. Inventory.
The records in the collection document the history and operation of the Alaska Black Caucus. Part II, Series 14, Videotapes, contains of 3 videocassettes (1/2 inch) of organization events and members: "Mickey Leland, Alaska Black Caucus Solidarity Banquet, Captain Cook Hotel, June 1985;" "Alaska Black Caucus Solidarity 1991"; and "Tony Brown's Journal, Alaska Black Caucus, National Dist. Apr. 20, 1990" with panelists Sterling Taylor, Bettye Davis, and E. Louis Overstreet.

ALASKA COURT SYSTEM. ANCHORAGE COURT HOUSE FACILITY. Videocassette; 1988. .1 cu. ft.
The collection consists of 1 fifteen minute informational videocassette (1/2 inch) produced by the Alaska Court System. The tape presents the need for more space and improved facilities at the Alaska Court System's Anchorage Court House Facility.

ALASKA HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Records; 1967-1996. 13.45 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records relating to the administration and activities of the Alaska Historical Society. Subseries 9b of the collection contains 2 videocassettes (3/4 inch) of 2 sixty second public service spots for the society on KTUU TV, Anchorage from 1985.

ALASKA HUMANITIES FORUM. CONFERENCE: LAND: BRIDGE TO THE COMMUNITY - A LITERARY RESPONSE. Recordings; 1973. .3 cu. ft.
The collection contains 3 reel to reel videotapes (1/2 inch) of the forum conference, "Land: Bridge to the Community" held at Alaska Methodist University in March, 1973.

ALASKA NATIVE HEALTH CAREER PROGRAM. Records; n.d., 1971-1985. 3.35 cu. ft. Inventory.
This records of this program consists of organization records, training and recruitment films, and miscellaneous reports and papers of associated organizations. Series III contains training videotapes (8 reel to reel inch videotapes, 1/2 inch; and 16 videocassettes, 3/4 inch) of Cody Bear Paw and miscellaneous health career topics, recruitment and training films of the University of Washington WAMI, and the Alaska Federation of Natives Health Career Program. Series VI consists of 2 copies each of 2 different 16mm films: "Why Not Medicine" (500 feet) and "A Taste of Medicine" (800 feet).

Alaska online, conversations with Red Boucher videocassette tapes; 1994-2002. 2 cu. ft. List.
Alaska On Line
is a weekly statewide television show featuring interviews with prominent Alaskans discussing issues effecting the state. It began as the idea of H. A. "Red" Boucher in early 1994. This collection contains 66 VHS cassette tapes of the television program Alaska On Line.

ALASKA WOMEN'S ORAL HISTORY PROJECT. Oral History Tapes and Papers; 1965-1982. 1.7 cu. ft. Published guide; Inventory.
The collection consists mainly of oral interviews with pioneer Alaskan women. Included is 1 videocassette (1/2 inch) of the presentation entitled "Women of the Alaska Territory: An Oral History."

C. EARL ALBRECHT (1905-1997); Papers; 1905-1997. 11 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contains the papers and publications documenting Dr. Albrecht's career in medicine and public health administration, primarily in Alaska. Part I, Series 4, consists of Albrecht's personal color and black and white motion picture film of his family and various locations in Alaska (5 reels, 16mm, 1,425 feet; 5 reels, 8mm, 585 feet; 2 VHS cassette reference tapes; 2 MiniDV master tapes).

AMERICAN CAN COMPANY. "ALASKA'S SILVER MILLIONS." Motion Picture Film; 1936. 1 videocassette.
The collection consists of a VHS videocassette reference copy of a black and white sound motion picture film on Alaska and the salmon fishing industry. The 34 minute film is narrated by Father Bernard R. Hubbard, S. J. It describes the three different sections of Alaska: the Yukon, Southeastern Alaska, and the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands. It also describes and documents the salmon runs and the salmon fishing and canning industry.

AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION. SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA CHAPTER. SYMPOSIUM: "AFTER THE LAND-USE COMMISSION, WHAT?" Records; 1974. .7 cu. ft. List.
This collection consists of the symposium program and 12 reel to reel videotapes (1/2 inch) which record the proceedings. The discussion panels were: Watershed Management, Fish and Game Management, Recreation Management, Natural Resource Management, Relating Use Philosophies to Management, and Legal Barriers to Cooperative Management. The guest luncheon and dinner speakers were Alaska Lieutenant Governor Henry A. Boucher, Dr. Robert W. Hiatt, President of the University of Alaska; Emil Notti, President of the Alaska Native Foundation; and Philip Rutledge, President of the American Society for Public Administration.

ANCHORAGE CIVIC OPERA ASSOCIATION. Records; n.d., 1962-1967, 1972- 1984. 8.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the records of the Anchorage Civic Opera Association. Part D, Series 4 of the collection, Publicity, Public Service Announcement-Video, contains 11 videotapes (8 reel to reel videotapes, 2 inch; and 3 videocassettes, 3/4 inch) of television public service announcements for the opera association from 1979-1981.

ANCHORAGE SYMPHONY LEAGUE. Records; 1946-1992. 12 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records of the Anchorage Symphony League as well as records of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, the Anchorage Chamber Symphony, and the Anchorage Symphony String Quartet. Series VIII, Videos, consists of 5 videotapes of league public service announcements (1 reel to reel videotape, 3/4 inch; 2 reel to reel videotapes, 2 inch; and 2 videocassettes, 3/4 inch).

ANCHORAGE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Records; n.d., 1953, 1959-1988, 1995. 5.2 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the records of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra. Series 9, Miscellaneous Papers, contains 4 public service announcements on 4 reels of 16mm color motion picture film for Carmen Dragon, guest conductor, ca. 1981.

THE ARC OF ANCHORAGE, INCORPORATED. Records; 1957-2000. 10.7 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of organizational records of the Arc of Anchorage, formerly knowna as ARCA or the Association of Retarded Citizens of Anchorage. Series 20, Videotape Cassettes, contains 5 VHS videocassettes of an ARCA summer camp (1988) and fall retreat (1990), the 1994 Special Olympics, and the ARCA Activity Center (1994).

JOHN ASPLUND. Papers; 1958-1972. 2.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of Anchorage businessman John Asplund's personal papers and papers relating to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Anchorage Area Borough. Series III contains a Greater Anchorage Area Borough film (1 reel, 16mm, black and white, 700 feet) on efforts to prevent pollution in the Anchorage area, with emphasis on water resources. The film features Borough Chairman, John Asplund and several other borough officials (Approx. 20 minutes).

THEODORE PAUL BANK, II (1923-1981). Papers; n.d., 1901, 1917-1980. 11.9 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records relating to Ted Bank's activities as an anthropologist and explorer. Series 12 consists of 10 reels of Bank's 16mm color motion picture film footage (4,900 feet) of the Aleutian Islands and the Bering Sea taken from 1949 to 1977.

HELEN DITTMAN BEIRNE. Papers; n.d., 1956-1994. 1 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection consists of the public service and personal papers of Alaskan physician and Alaska Department of Health and Social Services commissioner, Dr. Helen D. Beirne. Series four of the collection consists of two reels of eight millimeter color film of a trip to McKinley National Park, plus a VHS reference and MiniDV master tape of that film.

GRETCHEN T. BERSCH. Papers; 1977-2003. 1 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the professional papers and educational videocassettes of Anchorage Community College and University of Alaska Anchorage educator Gretchen T. Bersch. The collection contains 24 VHS videocassettes of educational presentations on various topics related to teaching and staff development.

EDWIN G. BEU, JR. Alaska Home Movie and Camera; 1958-1959. .85 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the edited Alaska home movie production and related moving picture camera of an Anchorage resident. The collection contains: the edited home movie film (16mm color Kodachrome, 800 feet, 22.5 minutes) and two MiniDV master tapes and two VHS videocassette reference copies of the movie with soundtrack (original and re-synchronized versions); The home movie is entitled, "A Look at Alaska," and includes footage of various locations in Anchorage, views along the Seward Highway, the Alaska Statehood Celebration held on June 30, 1958, the 1958 Fourth of July Parade in Anchorage, and a trip from Anchorage to Fairbanks via the Glenn and Richardson highways.

MARIA BROOKS. Papers; 1966-2006. 1.75 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers and videocassettes from the oral history and documentary projects of Maria Brooks. The second series concerns Brook's documentary, "The Odyssey of Captain Healy," about Captain Michael Healy of the U.S. Coast Guard. This series includes VHS and DVD copies of the documentary and 44 VHS (duplicate), and BetacamSP (master) tapes) of video interviews used to make the documentary. The third series, concerning the documentary, "Shipping Out: The Story of America's Seafaring Women," includes a DVD copy and 16 DVCAM videocassettes of the completed work and related interviews.

DOYLE AND GLORIA BUSHMAN. Alaska Earthquake Papers; 1964, 2000. .2 cu. ft. Slide List.
The collection consists of the earthquake related papers of two Anchorage residents. The collection contains a videocassette copy of a news feature interview with the Bushmans on earthquake preparedness by Seattle television station KOMO in 2000.

ANN FOX CHANDONNET (b. 1943). Papers; 1942-1989. 6.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers relating to Ann Chandonnet's work as an author and poet. Series 11, Miscellaneous, contains 1 videocassette (1/2 inch) of "Alaska: A Place for Poets, Parts I & II" from 1986.

HAKON CHRISTENSEN (1902-1956). Motion Picture Film; n.d. .6 cu. ft.
The collection consists of thirteen reels or 102 minutes of Alaska pilot Hakon Christensen's 16mm silent color motion picture film from his life and work in Alaska. The film is alo on 2 VHS videocassette reference tapes. Locations of the film include Anchorage, Palmer, the Matanuska Valley, Eklutna, Mirror Lake, Cantwell, Juneau, Ketchikan, Mount McKinley, McKinley National Park, and the Inland Passage. Notable subjects include footage of Hakon Christensen and a military cargo plane flying in a Mount McKinley expedition, led by Henry Bradford Washburn, Jr., onto a glacier (ca. 1944); a Fourth of July parade and other scenes in Anchorage (ca. 1939); planes landing and taking off from Merrill Field in Anchorage (ca. 1939); Christensen's cabin at Cantwell; Christenson's house in Anchorage; wildflowers on Eklutna Flats; the Moose Gooser Alaska Railroad train (ca. 1947); the Grandview Loop on the Alaska Railroad; rotary mining machinery at work at a coal mine (ca. 1950); and various hunting, fishing, and wildlife scenes from the ground and air.

DOROTHY AND GRENOLD COLLINS. (1909-1999; 1907-1992). Papers; 1900-1994. 12.9 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains the papers, photographs, and motion picture film of Grenold Collins, naturalist, bush pilot, and hunting guide, as well as his wife, Dorothy Collins. Series 12 of the collection consists of 58 reels of 16mm color film (Approx. 31,000 feet) relating to various sports activities and travels of Grenold Collins. The sports activities include hunting, fishing, and bird watching. Areas depicted include Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Africa, India, and Nepal. Three of the films are finished productions with soundtracks: "Safari" (big game hunting and wildlife in Africa), "The Great Country" (Brown bears at McNeil River, salmon traveling up river and spawning, Lake Grosvenor, Katmai National Park, Valley of 10,000 Smokes, Mt. Kenai, and Crater Lake), and "Memories of Africa" (East and Central Africa, wildlife, people, scenery). The rest of the film is silent raw footage. MiniDV masters and VHS reference tape have been created from the film (23 different).

COMMUNITY COLLEGE COALITION OF ALASKA. Records; 1986-1988. 2 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection consists of the operation records of the coalition. Series 2, No. 4, Subject Files, Governor, contains 1 videocassette (1/2 inch) of Governor Steve Cowper's state of the state and budget address from Jan. 1987.

LAWRENCE AND OLGA DOHENY FAMILY. Papers; 1917-1980. 21.85 cu. ft. Inventory
This collection consists of the papers of the Lawrence and Olga Doheny family, an Alaskan mining family. Part 5, Subgroup B, contains 11 reels of 16mm color film. Subjects of the family film include Olga's mother, Jenny Strandberg, in her garden in Anchorage; their children Michael, Kathleen, and Jenny; placer mining scenes from 1953; Olga's brother William Strandberg; Kathleen Doheny's graduation from Stanford University in 1960; and Jenny Doheny's wedding to Donald Huffman in 1961. Two VHS videocassette of the film are also included.

RUSSELL W. DOW (1915-1992). Papers. 1917-1992. 18.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the papers and photographs of photographer and Alaska pioneer, Russ Dow. Series 21, Motion Picture Film, consists of 10 reels of 16mm black and white and color film (3,125 feet) and 5 reels of 35mm black and white film. The 16mm film includes footage of Rusty Dow with two bear cubs, a spring breaukup at Lake George, the Chitina River and McCarthy, scenes along the Alaska Railroad from Fairbanks to Seward, the Fairbanks Dog Derby, the weather bureau office, the dedication of the USO in Anchorage, skiing, a flight to Juneau, and the Dows' trip outside in 1947. The 35mm footage is unidentified. There are videotape copies of the 16mm footage. Series 22, Videotape, consists of 1 videocassette copy (1/2 inch) of an Alaskan Television Network, "We Alaskans" feature series segment from 1984 on life and work at Independence Mine in the 1930s, with an interview of Russell and Rusty Dow.

OLIVER T. EDWARDS (1909-1984). Papers; 1934, 1939-1940. .8 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection of this wildlife management worker for the U.S. Forest Service contains various papers, motion picture film, color photographic slides, and photographs. Series II consists of 4 reels of 16mm motion picture film (Approx. 1,375 feet, 39 minutes, black and white and color, silent) depicting Alaskan animals including birds, undulates, rodents, bears, marine mammals, and fish. Footage also includes mountains, glaciers, and other scenery. The film was taken in Southeast and Southcentral Alaska. A reference VHS videocassette and MiniDV master videotape of the film are also included in the collection.

KARL F. EID (b. 1909). Papers; 1937-1998. 1.75 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers documenting Eid's professional culinary career and those documenting skiing and ski jumping in the Anchorage area. Series 3, Skiing/Ski Jumping Papers, contains 1 videocassette (1/2 inch, 17 minutes) of a ski jumping competition from the 20 and 30 meter jumps at Hilltop Ski Resort during the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous in 1985.

WENDELL ENDICOTT (1880-1954). Motion Picture Film; 1927, 1930. 3 reels, 16mm film. Inventory.
The collection consists of 3 reels of 16mm black and white motion picture film (2,700 feet) taken during Wendell Endicott's hunting trips to Southeastern Alaska. The films show hunting camps and activities, scenery, towns and villages, natives, wildlife, and ships.

HOWARD R. FILER (d. 1987). Papers; 1937, 1940-1941, 1956. .25 cu. ft. Inventory.
This collection contains correspondence, photographs, artifacts, and a videocassette concerning Howard Filer's travels in Europe (1937) and life in Anchorage (1940-1941) as a civilian contractor for the United States Army. Series 4, Interview, consists of 1 videocassette (1/2 inch) of an interview with Filer.

HENRY K. "HANK" FRESE (1922-2004). World War II Veterans' Papers and Photographs; 1942-2003. 5.2 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the veterans related papers and photographs of a Shemya Air Base veteran. The collection contains two videocassettes of the Shemya Veterans Reunion in 1991, and the Eleventh Air Force Association and Navy Patwing Four Airdales Reunion in 1995.

FRONTIER THINKING CONFERENCE. Videocassettes; March 1990. .45 cu. ft.
The collection consists of videocassettes of a conference on the issues of resource development and conservation. The collection contains: eight VHS videocassettes and one .75 inch videocassette. The VHS videocassettes are of conference proceedings, including speeches and panel discussions. The .75 inch videocassette is of a thirty second public service announcement for an Ecological Economics Conference.

SHARON GAGNON. Papers; 1975-2003. 10.85 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the papers of educator and University of Alaska Regent Sharon Gagnon. The collection contains five videocassettes of Alaskan productions that concern the following subjects: the Alaska-Siberia Medical Research Project (1987), the Alaska Aerospace Development Corporation (ca. 1991), the ribbon cutting ceremony for UAA student housing (1998), the Anchorage Museum of History and Art (1998), and the Alaskan Native Education Summit in Anchorage (2002).

GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN'S CLUBS OF ALASKA. Records; 1934-2001. 9 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the records a state women's volunteer service organization. Miscellaneous records in series 6 include three videocassette recordings of an exhibit of Alaskan first ladies' inaugural ball gowns mounted in Anchorage in 1999 and entitled, "Belle of the Ball."

RALPH (1916-1997) AND MARIE GEORGE (1917-2004). Papers; 1916-2004. 2.25 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the papers of a radar engineer and nurse from Anchorage. The collection contains six VHS videocassettes. Subjects include the Georges' home in Anchorage, Turnagain Arm, and a Hawaiian vacation.

ELINOR DELIGHT GREGG (1889-1970). Videocassette; 1936. .2 cu ft.
This collection consists of 1 videocassette copy (1/2 inch) of the black and white motion picture film taken by Bureau of Indian Affairs public health nurse Elinor Gregg during her trip to Alaska in 1939. The film shows her voyage on the North Star through the Inland Passage to Seward (with views of various towns); a train trip to Anchorage; a chartered airplane flight to Nome (views the float plane, interior villages, hospital interiors, and hospital staffs; sailing on the North Star to Barrow; and her return home by airplane via Fairbanks and Tanana.

HANS AND MARGARET HAFEMEISTER. Papers; 1943-1995. 1.85 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contains the papers of Seward mechanic Hans Hafemeister and social worker Margaret Pielage Hafemeister. The motion picture film consists of 3 reels of 16mm color motion picture film (1,100 feet) taken by Margaret Hafemeister during her 1947 trip aboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Wachussets and includes views of various coastal and island towns and villages in Southern Alaska, the Pribilof Islands, the Aleutian Islands, and Prince William Sound. Copies of the film on 3 videocassettes (1/2 inch) are also included in the collection.

GEORGE T. HARPER (1930-2004). BLACKS IN ALASKA HISTORY PROJECT. Papers; 1953-2004. 11.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the Alaskan Black History related papers of George Harper, president and co-founder of the Blacks in Alaska History Project, Inc. Series 15 of the collection contains 26 VHS videocassettes of programs concerning the subjects of Alaska Highway construction, World War II in Alaska, Captain Michael A. Healy and the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, noted local African Americans, and other miscellaneous Black History subjects.

HILARY J. HILSCHER. ALASKA TELECOMMUNICATIONS HISTORY PROJECT. Records and Research Materials; 1939-2005. 8.25 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of research materials concerning the history of telecommunications in Alaska and records of the Alaska Telecommunications History Project. The collection contains 44 videocassettes related to telecommunications in Alaska.

ALICE "DOVE" MONTGOMERY KULL (1897-1991). Papers; 1924-1991. 13.25 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of papers relating to Dove Kull's life, her activities in the field of social work and child welfare, her activities on behalf of senior citizen and women's issues, and her travels. Subseries 7c consists of 8 reels of 8mm color motion picture film, 20 minutes total, a reference VHS videocassette of the film , a MiniDV master tape of the film, and a 3/4 inch videocassette. The subject of the film includes views of Southeast Alaska and Prince William Sound, an Inupiat celebration in an unknown native village, native villages, and villagers in Northwest Alaska from about 1967, when Dove Kull was living in Kotzebue. The videocassette is from an 8 minute episode of the local television feature series, Rain Country, with an interview of Dove Kull.

KUUMBA BLACK ARTISTS NETWORK, INC. Records; 1981-1983. .5 cu. ft.
The organization's records includes 3 videocassettes (2-1/2 inch Beta, 1-1/2 inch VHS) of a Kuumba performance entitled, "Moments in Time."

JUDITH AND MALCOLM McDONALD. Papers; 1960-1966, 1987-1988, 1996-1997. 1.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of the Alaska related papers of Anchorage teachers Judith and Malcolm McDonald. The collection contains two reels of 8 mm motion picture film, plus a MiniDV master tape and VHS reference videocassette of the film. Subjects include downtown Anchorage, Merrill Field, Chelatna Lake Lodge, Spenard, a trip on the Seward Highway to Girdwood and Portage, a trip on the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks and return, and the Anchorage International Airport.

ANN AND ROBERT MOUNTEER. (Ak. Hist. Soc. Col.). Papers; 1901-1915, 1949-1966, 1995. 1.7 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contain papers relating Ann and Robert Mounteer's activities in Alaska including to travels in Alaska, homesteading in southcentral Alaska, and canoe trips in the Haines, Kachemak Bay, Lake Louise, Tyone River, and Tazlina Lake areas. Series 11 consists of 8 reels of 16mm color motion picture film (6,800 feet), along with 10 reference videocassettes and 5 MiniDV reference tapes. The film includes footage of homesteads from Fairbanks to the Kenai Peninsula and canoe trips in Kachemak Bay, Lake Louise, Tyone River, and Tazlina Lake (1952-1953).

OLDER PERSONS ACTION GROUP. Records; 1968-1994. 23.65 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records concerning the administration, finances, programs, and services of the Older Persons Action Group. Series 6, Visual Materials, contains a 9 minute videocassette (1/2 inch) about Denakkanaaga, Inc., an organization of Alaskan Athabaskan elders.

CHARLES H. PALDA (Ak. Hist. Soc. Col.). Alaska Highway Construction Photograph Album and Home Movies; n.d., 1942-1944. .25 cu. ft. Photograph List.The collection consists of the album and home movies of a construction company executive. The collection contains two digital video discs (DVDs) with transfers of Palda's color and black and white home movies and other film footage. Subjects include: Alaska Highway construction; duck and geese hunting in Canada; World War II (Castle Films newsreels); Panama Canal construction; family; and vacations. Main sections of the Alaska Highway footage include those for the Dawson Creek railhead, Peace River crossing, Fort St. John, the Sikanni Chief River and bridge, Okes Construction Company base camp, Muskwa River Bridge, the Peace River Bridge, and highway wrecks.

The collection consists of journalism professor Larry Pearson's papers concerning telecommunications in Alaska, including those of the Alaska House Special Committee on Telecommunications, the Technology Information Council in the governor's office, and the Center for Information Technology at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Series 6 contains 34 videocassettes (1/2 inch) of the the proceedings of the Chugach Conferences on telecommunications issues in Alaska held at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1989, 1990, and 1991.

THEODORE PEDERSEN (1905-1990). Videocassettes and Papers; 1914-1915, 1978, 1983. .35 cu. ft. List.
The collection consists of videocassette copies of original motion picture film and television productions concerning the life of Theodore Pedersen and his father Captain Christian T. Pedersen. The collection consists of four different videocassettes. The first is of an early motion picture film with titles, held at the National Archives, documenting a trip aboard Captain Christian T. Pedersen's ship, the whaler Herman, in about 1914 or 1915 (53 minutes). The second is of a selection of episodes of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, British Columbia documentary television series, The Northerners, from 1978 (109 minutes). The episodes examine arctic lifestyles, transportation, and traders. In three segments in from these episodes, Ted Pedersen speaks about his friendship with Captain Henry Larsen, helps start the engine of the dry-docked schooner Fox, once owned by Captain Christian T. Pedersen, and talks about life aboard his father's trading vessels, showing film footage he took during a trading voyage in 1935. The third is a 1983 KAKM public television documentary entitled, "Ted," on Ted Pederson's life (29 minutes). The documentary includes early footage taken by Pedersen in the arctic. The fourth is a working tape from the documentary "Ted," of Pedersen's film footage with voiceover of producer Carroll Hodge interviewing him about the footage and about his father (62 minutes).

JOHN R. "JACK" RODERICK. Papers; 1900-2002. 27 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consist of the personal, political, and historical papers of former Anchorage mayor and author of the book, Crude Dreams: A Personal History of Oil & Politics in Alaska. Series 1, subseries b, Anchorage mayoral materials, contains two different VHS videocassettes, one of four one minute color campaign spots from 1975, and the other of a twenty minute Anchorage 2000 Project mayor's interview. Series 4, subseries a, contains 7 VHS videocassettes of Jack Roderick's November 1991 deposition in the matter of the Amerada-Hess oil royalties ligitation.

JOSEPH AND LISA RUDD. Papers; ca. 1908, 1943-1984. 27 cu. ft. Series Descriptions.
The collection consists of the papers of Anchorage lawyer Joseph Rudd and Anchorage school administrator and state legislator Lisa Rudd. Part II, Subpart C, Series IV and V, Lisa Rudd Papers, Campaign Files - Audio-Visual Materials, contain 15 reel to reel videotapes (2 inch) and 2 videocassettes (3/4 inch) of television campaign spots from 1976 and 1980.

RURAL ALASKA COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM (RURALCAP). Records; 1965-1981. 100 cu. ft. Series List.
The papers in this collection consist primarily of administrative and operational records of RuralCAP. Series VI, Subseries C, Video Tapes, contains 9 reel to reel videotapes (1/2 inch) including those on air transportation hearings and child development training. Series VI, Subseries D, Films, contains 9 reels of 16mm color and black and white film including unidentified raw footage, training films, and a land claims film entitled, "That's The Way My Life Is Now." In addition, the unprocessed section contains 83 reel to reel videotapes (1/2 inch) primarily relating to seminars and workshops.

EVAN LESTER SITTER (1898-1986). Motion Picture Film; 1948. 1 videocassette.
This collection consists of 1 VHS videocassette copy of a 16mm color motion picture film taken by Sitter while on a trip to Alaska in 1948. The trip included stops at Glacier National Park, the Canadian Border Customs Building, Dawson, the Peace River Bridge, Fort Nelson, Lake Louise, Laird Lodge, the Alaska/Yukon Border, Fairbanks, Nome, Kotzebue, Copper Center, Thompson Pass, Valdez, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Seattle. Included are pictures of natural features, animals, a fish wheel, ships, and planes.

STEVEN AND LESLIE. Motion Picture Film; 1960. .25 cu. ft.
The collection consists of the home movie of a tourist's visit to Alaska. The collection contains: one reel of 8 mm color motion picture film (208 feet or 14 minutes); one videocassette copy of the film; and a MiniDV digital master tape of the film. Alaska-related subjects of the film include: aerial views of Southeast Alaska; the Seward Highway; Portage Lake and Portage Glacier; Hatcher Pass; Inupiat dancers and drummers in parkas, as well as a brass band, performing in front of the sign for the Guilded Cage Curio Shop of the Alaska Crippled Children's Association, in Anchorage; the Fourth of July Parade on Fourth Avenue in Anchorage; and the Ship Creek area of Anchorage.

HAROLD STRANDBERG (1909-1995). Papers; 1923-1985. 8.5 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection consists of records concerning Harold Strandberg's work as Anchorage Port Commissioner, as a state representative, and as a mining engineer. Subseries 4c of the collection consists of a copy of film of the Strandberg family and mining operations in Alaska from 1937 to 1938 on 1 videocassette (1/2 inch).

BENJAMIN B. TALLEY (1903-1998). Papers; 1930-1993. 20 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contains papers on Benjamin Talley's military career as an officer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the Alaska capital relocation effort; the planning and production of the documentary "Alaska At War;" the 1964 earthquake; the Bradley Lake hydroelectric project and the oil industry in Alaska; photographs; annd other materials. Part 2, Series 1, contains 2 copies of a recording of an Adak Community Forum meeting (Sept. 1979) on the Aleutian Campaign and the evacuation of Kiska Island during World War II on 2 videocassettes (3/4 inch).

THIRTEENTH REGIONAL CORPORATION. Records; 1971-1997. 15.4 cu. ft. Inventory.
The collection contains records relating to the administration and operation of the Thirteenth Regional Corporation, and organization representing Alaska natives not living in Alaska. Subseries 10a, Film and Videotape, contains an 8mm film entitled "13th Corporation-9/7" and 3 videocassettes (1/2 inch). The latter include the 1978 video production "More Than Bows and Arrows" (60 minutes); Seattle area television coverage of the fire and sinking of the Al-Ind-Esk-A Sea seafood processing ship in Everett harbor in Oct. 1982 (25 minutes); and the video production, "Protein from the Sea" (30 minutes).

267th SEPARATE COAST ARTILLERY BATTALION. REUNION. Reunion Videocassette; 1990. .1 cu. ft. List.
The collection consists of 1 VHS videocassette which was compiled for the 1990 reunion of the 267th Coast Artillery Battalion in Seward, Alaska. The video consists of interviews with officers of the battalion, focusing on their on their time in Alaska during World War II, and captioned photographs of battalion members, activities, and locations. There is also a partial list of captions which appear in the video.

The collection consists of a VHS videocassette copy of approximately four hours worth of U. S. Army Signal Corps black and white film footage from the Battle of Attu.

The collection consists of the urban policy research records of the Anchorage Urban Observatory for the years 1974-1979. Series 3, No. 14, Project Files, Housing Study, contains 1 videocassette (3/4 inch, black and white) of the Anchorage Housing Symposium, Program Report, recorded on Nov. 19-20, 1975 (27 minutes).

UNIVERSITY OF ALASKA. CREATING ALASKA - THE ORIGINS OF THE 49TH STATE. Alaska Constitutional Convention Commemorative Materials; 2005-2006. .2 cu. ft.
The collection consists of materials commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the Alaska Constitutional Convention created by the University of Alaska's Creating Alaska project. The collection contains a DVD copy of the documentary, The 49th Star: Creating Alaska, produced by KUAC-TV at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

PETER VOGEL. Photographs and Film; 1937-1940. 1 cu. ft. List.
The collection contains 1 videocassette (1/2 inch) copy of a black and white 16mm motion picture film. The film depicts Dr. Vogel's trip to Alaska and his activities in 1937 and 1938. Included are views of Ketchikan, Juneau, and Valdez; gold mining operations at the Middle Fork Mine on the Chestichina River, and at the Edstrom Brother's Mine on Ketchum Creek near Circle Hot Springs; and scenes of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks campus. In addition, there is a taped narration by Dr. Vogel of the contents of the film.
