Borrowing / Circulation

Activate Your Library Card

  • Students, staff, and faculty of UAA and APU may activate library cards online using the Library Card Activation form. Please note that activation requires 24 hours.
  • UAA: after successful activation, your UAA Wolfcard is your Library card. You must present your Wolfcard when borrowing materials from the Library.
  • APU: once your card is activated, you will receive a barcode sticker that is placed on your APU ID card. Your APU ID card is required to borrow Library materials.

Borrowing Privileges

  • Undergraduate students and staff may borrow up to 25 items at a time. The checkout period is 28 days. Two renewals are allowed.
  • Faculty and graduate students may borrow up to 50 items. The checkout period is one semester.

  • Most circulating books, including government documents may be borrowed for 21-28 days, depending on patron status.
  • Juvenile books are checked out for 28 days.
  • Reference books, Alaska Reference books, and periodicals are not circulated.
  • Faculty and graduate students have an extended loan period.
  • ARLIS books may be checked out for 28 days

Delinquent Patrons

  • Patrons who have long overdue materials or fines of $10.00 or more are placed on hold with the University accounting office and are prevented from registering, ordering transcripts, etc. until such time as all overdue materials are returned or replaced and all fees or fines are paid.

Fines

  • Fines accrue at $.25 (twenty-five cents) per day, per overdue item. The maximum fine per item is $10.00.
  • Reserve fines are charged at the rate of $1.00 per hour for 2 hour check outs and $5.00 per day for all others. The maximum fine is $20.00 per reserve item.
  • When a patron has incurred $5.00 in fines or material has not been returned for 28 days, the library suspends borrowing privileges until fines are paid, and the item is returned or a replacement fee has been paid.
  • If a book is placed in a book drop when the library is closed, fines will continue to accrue until the library is open and the book can be checked in.

Library Card Policies for UAA and APU

  • A library card is available to all current students, staff, and faculty of UAA and APU.
  • A patron must present a current university identification card or registration receipt to the library circulation desk.
  • A barcode is placed on that ID card or a separate card may be issued.
  • ***NOTE: Library cards expire in September and must be renewed at the beginning of each new academic year by presenting the above mentioned documentation. Outstanding fines must be paid at the time of renewal. There is a $5.00 charge for a replacement library card.

Lost Books

  • The standard replacement charge for a lost book is $55.00 per item plus payment of any outstanding fines and processing fee ($3.00).

Lost Interlibrary Loan Books

  • The replacement charge for a lost book obtained via Interlibrary Loan is $75.00 per item plus payment of any outstanding fines and processing fee ($3.00).

Municipal and ARLIS Library Cards

  • Patrons may check out materials using their Anchorage Public Library or ARLIS library cards.
  • Patrons may check out up to 25 books for 21 days and one renewal period.
  • Materials borrowed may be returned at a Public Library branch, ARLIS, or the Consortium Library.
  • Fines may be paid at either the Anchorage Public Library or Consortium Libraries. Lost materials must be paid for at the owning library.

Overdue Materials

  • One overdue notice is mailed out when a book is approximately ten days overdue (or e-mailed after seven days overdue).
  • The next notice is a bill for the replacement cost of the book.

Reciprocal Borrower Cards

  • Effective July 1, 1999, the Consortium Library extended reciprocal borrowing privileges to patrons from participating libraries.
  • A photo ID, a permanent address, and an active library card from the participating library is required at the time of application.
  • Reciprocal Card privileges allow patrons to check out up to 10 books at a time for 21 days and include one renewal period.
  • A patron may renew by phone, walk-in, or by logging into their account on our Web site.
  • These limits apply to Alumni patrons as well.
  • Fine and Lost Book policies apply to all patrons who use the Consortium Library.
  • UAA is not funded to provide interlibrary loan service to Alumni or Reciprocal Card patrons. This service is available through Anchorage Public Library.
  • Reciprocal are not issued to corporations or groups and cannot be transferred or assigned to another individual.

Renewals

  • A book may be renewed (depending on patron type) for two additional loan periods unless it has been requested by another patron.
  • Patrons may renew books by telephone (786-1871), in person at the Circulation Desk, or by logging into their account online.
