CLASSIFICATION:Data Analyst (Advanced Systems Applications Section)
DESCRIPTION:Under the supervision of a Senior Data Analyst, assume
general responsibility for the on-going operation of the agency’s local
area network, including maintenance of hardware and software for general
office and for specialized applications.Act as project manager or
principal team member on activities to analyze network needs, develop
long-term information system plans, policies & procedures.Lead or assist
in overseeing procurement of new computer-based information systems for
the agency. Supervise ASA staff, student interns, or direct the work of
consultants, as needed.Provide direct user support as needed.
SALARY RANGE:Grade VII of the Salary Plan:$51,388 to $65,780 per year.

MINIMUM

more of the appropriate disciplines, such as Computer Science,

TYPICAL

6.Work with professional staff in overseeing development of computer
technology-based applications by outside contractors, including:(a)
helping develop requirements, scope of work and hardware/software
specifications; (b) evaluating proposals; (c) participating in project
activities; (d) reviewing contractor-developed designs and products; and
(e) assisting in integration of new projects with existing systems.
7.Work with staff from other partner agencies (e.g., local government,
public transit, state government) to coordinate information system
development activities, as appropriate.

that MTC’s information systems maintain a high degree of reliability,
cost-effectiveness, and technological advancement, e.g., network
performance benchmarking, migration to new networking configurations or

IV.Computing Environment
A. Network
MTC has offices at two locations connected by a T-1 line.About 80 staff
members work at the main office at MetroCenter and 40 a mile away at
1999 Harrison Street.At MetroCenter we have a mixture of Netware 5 and
Netware 3.2 running on 10 Mbit switched Ethernet, soon to be replaced by
10/100 Mbit.At the Harrison office we are running Novell Netware 5 on
a10/100 Mbit switched Ethernet network.
There are four Netware 5, two Netware 3.12 and one NT4 servers at
MetroCenter.Three of the NW 5 servers are Compaq Proliant 1600 350s with
256 or 384 Mbytes memory and 18.2 Gbytes of fully duplexed disk space:
the main file and print server; the BorderManager fire-wall and the
Groupwise server.The fourth NW 5 server is aGateway 350 running Veritas
Backup Exec.The two NW 3.12 servers run applications that can not run in
NW 5: our current email scheduling systems, Pegasus Mail and Meeting
Maker, that will shortly be replaced by Groupwise, run on an HP LC II
266 with 9.1 Gbytes mirrored disk space; the Platinum accounting and
Ceridian payroll/HR systems run on a similar server with 4 Gbytes disk
space.The Platinum server is accessible only by the accounting and
administrative services staffs.The NT server is a Dell 450 dual
processor with 36 Gbytes of RAID running MS Terminal Server to present
ESRI GIS applications to work with the Thomas Bros digital map of the
Bay Area.At Harrison Street the main file and print server and the
backup server are duplicated.The MTC network is connected to the
Internet through a T-1, which is shared with ABAG, another agency at
MetroCenter.
B.Workstations
Windows PCs
There are 120 Gateway 2000 PCs on the network ranging from Pentium 75s
(with 200 MHz upgrade chips) with 1 Gbyte drives to Pentium III 450s
with 10 Gbyte drives.Low end PCs are being replaced so that by the end
ofFY99-2000 the low end computers will be Pentium 133s. The standard
operating system is Windows 95b.The Accounting section is the exception
where eight users have Windows NT 4 workstation.
The operating system and standard software resides on each workstation
hard drive.All have: Windows 95 or NT, MS Office 2000, Mijenix
PowerDesk; Netscape Navigator; Shiva LANrover Dial Out; McAfee Virus
Checker; Adobe Acrobat Reader; the Meeting Maker client software and the
Groupwise client.Other local software includes: the Terminal Server
client for users of the GIS system; transportation planning software
(minUTP, Viper, Logit & TP+) for the modeling group and TextPad, SAS &
MapInfo clients for modeling & several other users.
Macintoshes
There are 11 Macs (5 G-4, 1 G-3, 5 iMac) used by the Public Information
and Graphics sections.The Macintoshes use Mac OS 8.6 and 9; all have MS
Office 98.The Graphics Section has a complete array of graphics and
desktop publishing software.
Other
Also on the network, but not directly accessible to users, are two Sun
workstations running Solaris for the Transit Information website and the
MTC Library catalog and website.
