PREREQUISITES: This course is designed for people with programming
experience. We are awaiting a Qualifications Survey that is provided by
Nova Laboratories in order to ensure participants have the necessary
experience and knowledge to successfully complete the Basic Java
Programming Course. As soon as it is available, we will email it to
everyone. When you receive it, please complete it and copy and paste it
to
your registration. It must be filled out before we can accept your
registration. Please excuse this inconvenience, but we wanted to get
this
detailed information to you as quickly as possible.
PAYMENT: Checks, Visa/MasterCard Credit Cards and Purchase Orders.
DEADLINES: Applications must be received by 2/3/01 via email if applying
for a grant. We prefer that other applications are received by 2/8/01,

However,
we do expect this class to fill quickly.
TIME: The class will be from 9:00 am through 5:00 pm. However, we have
made arrangements with UAA (Diplomacy Bldg) to reserve the lab

late
to work on any assignments.

physical address of the Diplomacy Building is 4500 Diplomacy Drive. The

PROVIDER: Nova Laboratories provides training for Java, and only Java.
They maintain close ties with Sun Mircrosystems to ensure their training
is continually current. Their courses are designed for programmers with
real-world experience. This course teaches the skills necessary to pass
Sun's Java Programmer certification. Nova Laboratories describes the
Basic
Java Course as follows: (Note: the full description has been sent as an
attachment with this email).
Students who attend Basic Java Programming for Developers will leave the
course armed with the skills they require to develop solid
object-oriented
applications written in Java, using sound coding techniques and best
coding practices.
Working in a hands-on environment, developers will:
Understand not only the fundamentals of the Java language (using JDK
1.3), but also its importance, uses, strengths and weaknesses
Understand the basics of the Java language and how it relates to OO
programming and the Object Model Learn to use Java multi-threading and
exception handling features
Understand and use classes, inheritance and polymorphism
Develop GUI applications using AWT and Swing Use Java for
client-side
applets, networking and communication applications
COST: Thanks to a generous grant from the Workforce Development Office,
we
were able to reduce the cost of the course by approximately $500 per
person. The cost is $1200 for AITP / AHTBC members and $1350 for
non-AITP
/ AHTBC members. If you are sponsored by an organization that is a
member
of AITP, you may be eligible for the lower rate. Cost for the first year
is $110, subsequent years are $95/year. If we receive your AITP
membership
application with the registration, you are eligible for the lower rate.
If
you need an application form, please send an email to
aitpeduc@hotmail.com. For more information on the Anchorage chapter,
visit
http://www.aitp-ak.org.
INDIVIDUAL GRANTS: In addition to providing a general grant that enabled
us to lower our registration fee, the Workforce Development Office is
also
offering grants to individuals who want to attend this course. In order
to
provide time to process these grants, the registrant must have their
registration to me by February 3, 2001. We will provide more detailed
instructions at that time, but applicants will be required to fill out
basic paperwork with the Workforce Development Office. This will require
approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours during regular business hours on 2/5, 2/6
or 2/7. There will also be some type of follow-up requirement so the
Workforce Development Office can track the effectiveness of this
training.
If you are interested in applying for this grant, please write grant on
the appropriate line on the registration.
