In addition, this is a state position. It is widely known that state
employees make less (especially in the IT field) than their counterparts in
the private sector. Personally, I took a 20K/yr pay cut to do essentially
the same job with the SoA that I was doing in the oil field - however I
traded in 13 hour days and on call 24/7 with 2 weeks of vacation for five
weeks of vacation (to start!), 7.5 hour days, flexible schedules, etc.
Also, the jobs for the state are bracketed ahead of time. Any Network
Speicalist II with < 1yr of time in service at the state is making within 1%
of what I make right now. It's not a secret, at any time you can see what a
government employee makes (base salary). Now, where you can quickly
progress is if you get in a position that is posted as a flex, meaning Web
Designer I-IV instead of Web Designer I. This type of position lets you
progress quickly if you have the skills, or be hired at a higher grade.
On that note, it's time for my Union mandated coffee break.
