[NUGA] MTA and PS3's
Jim,

Here is a quick question, that may have little to do with the issue.  Is she using an Internet router?  That should perform the PPoE for her and will also protect her equipment from outside attacks.  I have not hooked up a PS3 myself, but cannot imagine using a router would be an issue.

I am still amazed at how many people connect to the Internet regularly from home without some type of hardware Internet Router with some sort of SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection).  Software firewalls can serve their purpose against software exploits and hijackers, but with those, you have already allowed an attacker to get to your computer.  Hardware firewalls stop most external attacks before they get to your network.  It's just a better place to put up the first line of defense.  Prices for most run $40 to $200 depending on what features you wish to include.

Please keep in mind, the MTU on the router must be adjusted for PPoE service so the packets are not getting fragmented.  The speed of your browsing can be cut in half if not adjusted properly.  It's a lot easier to do this on the router than on your computer, and each computer or device you connect to your modem.  There are many articles online on how to do this, but MTA should be able to make the best recommendations there as well.

Again, if this has nothing to do with her problems, I apologize.

Subject: [NUGA] MTA and PS3's

Folks,

I am aware that there are several MTA tech employee's on here, and I
have a question that doesn't seem to have been able to be solved by tech
support. I have a friend who lives in Thunderbird Falls that is
attempting to get her PS3 online. She has tried several times and the
sticking point seems to be the MTA PPOE settings. She has called tech
support and apparently there is only one person who knows how to do it
and he is never there.... any ideas?
