Collection summary: Photographs taken by a soldier who served in the 18th Engineers, U.S. Army during World War II.

Biographical note:
Cesare Carlucci served in the 18th Engineers during World War II, which included stays on Attu and Shemya Islands. After the war, he entered professional baseball and worked as an umpire for about thirty years. Later he began making custom-made umpire equipment.

Collection description:
This collection consists of 14 photographs which Carlucci took while on Shemya. The photographs depict the 18th Engineers landing area, quarters, the aftermath of a storm, and airplanes.

Arrangement: The collection is arranged in no discernible order.

Separated materials: The diary of a Japanese medical officer, Nobuo Tatsuguchi, who died during the Battle of Attu was removed from the collection. A copy of the diary is available in the Archives’ Ephemera collections: EPH-0182.

Acquisition note: The collection was given to Archives by Cesare Carlucci in 1985.

Processing information: This collection was described in 1985. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Veronica Denison in 2015.
