Biographical note:
Mel Kalkowski was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1947. He attended high school and the community college in Baltimore and received a certificate in journalism and communications from the U.S. Defense Department Information School while in the Army. He later received an Associate of Arts Degree from Anchorage Community College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Kalkowski became involved in the communications and journalism fields while working as a broadcast specialist of the U.S. Army’s Public Affairs Office. He also worked as a television reporter and radio announcer in Baltimore and later as a television and radio news director, reporter, and announcer in Anchorage. Kalkowski began working for the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1975 and has since served UAA in various roles as director of public affairs, director of electronic communications, and director of military programs, among other positions.

Collection description:
This collection contains papers and photographs collected by Mel Kalkowski.  These materials include a survey of Anchorage area high schools, likely conducted by the Office of Public Affairs at the University of Alaska Anchorage in 1977-1978; papers concerning the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Anchorage in June 1985; records of Greater Anchorage, Inc.’s operations and finances related to the Anchorage Fur Rendezvous, 1980-1990; and personal papers and photographs, including color slides of Fur Rendezvous and posters documenting theater, music, film, basketball, and other events at Anchorage Community College, University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Methodist University, the Alaska Festival of Music, and other locations in Alaska.
