Collection description:
The collection consists of a tourist’s souvenir diary for an Alaska cruise on the Pacific Coast Steamship Company’s S. S. Spokane, which sailed from Seattle in 1908. The small booklet is for Alaska excursions for the 1908 season. The item contains: a calendar; a list of company steamships; a list of company routes; distances from Seattle to ports and points of interest; heights of principal mountains and peaks on the Pacific Coast; an article commenting on Alaskan points of interest to tourists; and several pages for diary entries. The tourist’s diary entries are handwritten, covering the period from July 31st to August 6th. During this time, the ship made stops in Victoria, Metlakatla, Ketchikan, Killisnoo, Sitka and Glacier Bay. The entries mention weather, scenery, lectures and other aspects of life on ship, and tourist attractions seen and activities undertaken during the trip.
