Biographical note:
Arthur Francis Buddington was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1890. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Brown University in 1912 and 1913, and a doctorate in geology from Princeton University in 1916. His professional positions included: instructor at Brown University (1917-1919); petrologist, Geophysical Laboratory, Carnegie Institute of Technology (1919-1920); professor of geology at Princeton University (1920-1970s), including the title of Elmer Blair Professor of Geology beginning in 1959; and geologist for the U. S. Geological Survey (1943-1962). Buddington was a member of a U. S. Geological Survey team studying Southeast Alaska from 1920 to 1925. Arthur F. Buddington died in Cohasset, Massachusetts in 1980.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the Southeast Alaska photographs of geologist Arthur F. Buddington. The collection contains: original typed and handwritten lists of captions to the numbered photographs in the collection, written by Arthur Buddington and W. B. Jewell; and 420 black and white prints from three original photograph albums. The photographs document mountains, glaciers, islands, valleys, rivers, creeks and other geological features in the Wrangell, Sitka, Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg and Hyder districts. Glaciers photographed include: Nelson, Baird, Sawyer, Dawes, Sumdum, Salmon, Texas, Ferguson, Chickamin, Grand Pacific, Gilbert, Rendu, Carrol, Reid, Casey, Hidden, Munro, Le Conte, Lampugh and Muir. There are also images showing members of the U. S. Geological Survey team and their boat, the Beilby. Seventeen of the 348 prints listed in the caption lists are not included in the collection.

Arrangement: The photographs from the first two album are arranged in numerical order. The handwritten numbers on the photographs correspond to the numbers found in the caption list. The photographs from the third album were arranged by numbers on the backs of the photographs, lot numbers, and type and location of captions. This arrangement may or may not reflect the original order of the album.
