Biographical note:
Raymond Forrest Farwell, Jr. graduated from Harvard University with a Bachelors of Science in Government in 1940. While at Harvard, he was a member of the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps. Farwell was commissioned as an officer in the U. S. Naval Reserve in June 1941 and served on active duty in the U. S. Navy until December 1945. During World War II, he served on the following ships (“YP” stands for patrol craft and “APD” for high-speed transport): USS YP-74 (Dec. 1941-Apr. 1942); USS YP-88 (Apr.-Oct. 1942); USS Katmai (YP-575, Oct. 1942-Mar. 1943); and USS Kline (APD-120, Oct. 1944-Mar. 1945). Farwell served in Alaskan waters from December 1941 to June 1943.  After release from active duty, he continued to serve as an officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve until May 1959, when he was discharged with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Farwell’s civilian career included administrative positions at Virginia Mason Hospital and the Swedish Hospital, both in Seattle, Washington.

Collection description:
The collection consists of the military papers of U. S. Naval Reserve officer Raymond F. Farwell, Jr. The collection contains Farwell’s officer service record file, naval certificates, operation orders from the Naval Air Station in Kodiak, night orders for the USS Katmai, and a World War II U. S. Navy officer’s hat.
