Biographical note:
Nancy Ellen Carlock was from Hemet, California. In May 1967, she took a thirteen-day tour of Alaska by airplane, bus, railroad, and ship arranged by Hemet/Palm Springs Mobile Homes in Hemet, California. The tour from Hemet included stops in Anchorage, Portage Glacier, Alyeska Ski Resort, Nome and Kotzebue (via Alaska Airlines), Fairbanks (including the Alaska Centennial Exposition), Whitehorse (via the Alaska Highway), Skagway (via the White Pass and Yukon Railroad), Haines, Juneau, Ketchikan, and Vancouver, British Columbia. Carlock also toured Victoria, British Columbia on her trip. Her steamship voyage on the Inside Passage was aboard the S.S. Yukon of Alaska Cruise Lines, Ltd. Nancy Carlock died in Los Angeles, California, in 1995.

Collection description:
The collection contains the 1967 Alaska tour scrapbook created by Nancy E. Carlock. Included in the collection is a xerographic copy of the original scrapbook and the original cover and pages containing two certificates, clippings, and memorabilia. The collection consists of photographic prints; color art and photo post cards; and Alaskan tourist photographic cards. The collection also contains trip documentation including an itinerary, steamship passenger list, tickets, travel confirmation letters, Alaska Airlines brochures, and stationery; greeting cards; loose clippings of newspaper articles; a program, newsletter and brochure from a conference on Alaskan history held at Alaska Methodist University; and nine menus including seven Alaska Cruise Line menus. Some menu covers feature paintings of Alaskan dogs by artist Josephine Crumrine. Subjects of the photographs include: Downtown Anchorage; Alaska Methodist University campus; Portage Glacier Lodge; Nome; Kotzebue; Fairbanks; the Alaska Highway; Ketchikan; and Saxman Park. Subjects of the post cards include: Alaska and United Airlines; Downtown Anchorage; the Anchorage Westward Hotel; Portage and Matanuska glaciers; Alyeska Ski Resort; Nome; the University of Alaska campus in Fairbanks; Whitehorse, Yukon Territory; Ketchikan; Saxman Park; steamships; wildlife; and scenery.

Custodial history: The collection was given to the UAA Canadian Studies Program prior to 2007. In 2007, the collection was donated to the UAA/APU Consortium Library by Dr. Diddy Hitchins.

Acquisition note: The collection was transferred from the UAA/APU Consortium Library to the Archives in 2007.

Processing information: The original scrapbook was dismantled, materials rearranged, and collection described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2007. The guide to the collection was converted to current standard by Veronica Denison in 2016.
