This week on Informania, O’Hara Shipe, Undergraduate Research and Recruiting Coordinator for the University\u00a0Honors College,\u00a0talks about Honors College courses and requirements, and the numerous undergraduate research awards<\/a> available\u00a0to UAA students!<\/p>\n

The Honors College<\/a>\u00a0includes a series of seminar\u00a0college courses, some which\u00a0qualify for General Education Requirements (GER).\u00a0 Can anyone\u00a0be part of the Honors College?\u00a0 You do need at least a\u00a03.0 grade point average (gpa), and there is an application process that students go through to become part of the Honors College.\u00a0 Are you eligible and interested?\u00a0 Their website address\u00a0is http:\/\/www.uaa.alaska.edu\/honorscollege\/<\/a>, or you can stop by to see O’Hara\u00a0in Rasmuson Hall (RH),\u00a0Room 115, or call 786-1086 for more information.<\/p>\n

Undergraduate Research Awards<\/p>\n

Do you have a great idea for a project, product, scientific exploration?\u00a0 You may be eligible to receive an Undergraduate Research Award.\u00a0 This award can help students take an idea and move it toward a reality.\u00a0 There are two deadlines for awards in the Spring Semester 2014, one is February 28, and the other is April 24.\u00a0 O’Hara encourages students to find a faculty mentor to help guide the process to success.\u00a0 She is also available to answer questions.\u00a0\u00a0O’Hara can be reached at 786-1086, or in the Honors College office, Rasmuson Hall, Room 115.<\/p>\n

Unsure about what undergraduate research means?\u00a0 You may\u00a0explore the variety of student undergraduate research projects completed by UAA students during the 2013 Spring and Fall semesters at the Undergraduate Research and Discovery Symposium, April 17 and 18, 2014.\u00a0 For more information, go to http:\/\/www.uaa.alaska.edu\/honorscollege\/ours\/Symposium\/index.cfm<\/a><\/p>\n

O’Hara, herself,\u00a0has experienced success\u00a0conducting undergraduate research while a student (and hockey player) at Brown University, so when she shares her insight it is from firsthand experience!\u00a0 O’Hara\u00a0has been through the challenging and useful process of\u00a0creating\u00a0the proposal, which includes a\u00a0summary of your\u00a0idea, and\u00a0a budget.\u00a0 Support is here for you, UAA students!<\/p>\n
