{"id":1542,"date":"2023-01-13T14:05:02","date_gmt":"2023-01-13T23:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/?p=1542"},"modified":"2023-01-13T13:57:53","modified_gmt":"2023-01-13T22:57:53","slug":"chatgpt-new-year-new-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/2023\/01\/13\/chatgpt-new-year-new-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"ChatGPT: New Year, new technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many of the librarians at the Consortium Library are experimenting with new technology in the new year, including ChatGPT and DALL\u2219E 2 by <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\">OpenAI<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Launched publicly at the end of 2022, these new artificial intelligence (AI) systems are useful in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chat.openai.com\/chat\">ChatGPT<\/a> is a chatbox, so you can use it to ask questions, such as \u201cExplain quantum computing in simple terms\u201d or \u201cGot any creative ideas for a 10-year old\u2019s birthday?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It does have limitations, including that it may generate incorrect information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/dall-e-2\/\">DALL\u2219E 2<\/a> can create art and images from a description in natural language. Here is one example:<\/p>\n<p>A librarian typed the prompt \u201cRecreation in Alaska in the style of romanticism\u201d in DALL\u2219E 2 and it generated four images, including this one:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1543 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism-624x624.png 624w, https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/files\/2023\/01\/DALL\u00b7E-2023-01-13-10.59.27-Recreation-in-Alaska-in-the-style-of-romanticism.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Interesting!<\/p>\n<p>AI systems have professional applications at our institutions, as demonstrated by <a href=\"https:\/\/business.uaa.alaska.edu\/academics\/certificates\/index.cshtml#baai\">UAA\u2019s Graduate Certificate in Business Analytics and AI<\/a> and this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskapacific.edu\/artificial-intelligence-in-the-amazon\/\">APU-affiliated study<\/a> published on AI\u2019s role in sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p>The question that librarians are asking is how and when is it appropriate for students to use AI systems in academic works?<\/p>\n<p>All of us in the UAA\/APU community should refer to UAA\u2019s policies on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uaa.alaska.edu\/students\/conduct\/academic-integrity.cshtml\">Academic Integrity<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.uaa.alaska.edu\/handbook\/student-freedoms-rights-and-responsibilities\/student-code-of-conduct\/\">UAA Student Code of Conduct<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alaskapacific.edu\/dean-of-students\/policies-procedures\/\">the APU Student Handbook<\/a> before using AI systems in any materials eventually submitted in assignments, exams, or other academic work, including work intended to be independent.<\/p>\n<p>Unsure if using AI systems is ok for your assignment?
