{"id":1852,"date":"2024-02-01T12:52:50","date_gmt":"2024-02-01T21:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/?p=1852"},"modified":"2024-02-01T12:52:50","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T21:52:50","slug":"using-the-library-will-get-you-better-grades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/blogs\/reference\/2024\/02\/01\/using-the-library-will-get-you-better-grades\/","title":{"rendered":"Using the library will get you better grades!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, that\u2019s right, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libraryassessment.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/19-Croxton-QuantifyingtheValue.pdf\">a study from the University of North Carolina<\/a> (Croxton &amp; Moore, 2019) confirms what we all have long suspected: students who use library services have higher GPAs.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does \u201cuse library services\u201d actually mean at the UAA\/APU Consortium Library?<\/p>\n<p>Obvious answers to that question might include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Come to our beautiful building to study.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.consortiumlibrary.org\/c.php?g=1033465&amp;p=7491386#s-lg-box-wrapper-27906719\">quiet spaces<\/a>, spaces for collaborative work, small rooms with doors, and tables by windows with uplifting vistas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Borrow books (or <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.consortiumlibrary.org\/borrowtech\">other things<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We have access many thousands of items from around Alaska and (<a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.consortiumlibrary.org\/ill\">and the world<\/a>!) here that <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.consortiumlibrary.org\/c.php?g=1032978&amp;p=7488028#s-lg-box-wrapper-27893791\">you can borrow<\/a> to take home, or access online on a device (like e-books and e-audiobooks).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However&#8230;if you really want to get the top grades, these are the library services that will fast track your learning and achievements.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Work with a librarian on your research<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Google will get you a million possible answers but a Librarian will get you the right one<\/em>. Meeting with a <a href=\"https:\/\/ask.consortiumlibrary.org\/\">librarian at the Ref Desk<\/a> (on the first floor) is a savvy thing to do for any research project.\u00a0 For the uber-tough questions, you can even make an appointment with the specialist <a href=\"https:\/\/consortiumlibrary.org\/research\/appointments.php\">Liaison Librarians<\/a> (who are experts in certain subject areas).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Use databases<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.consortiumlibrary.org\/az.php\">database<\/a> will save you time and get you directly to the best information (as opposed to Google or other sources where you have to very carefully judge the quality of what comes up). This is because all the journal articles and other information on a database has been put there <em>because<\/em> it\u2019s top quality.<\/li>\n<li>Note: there are some tricks to learn if you are new to using databases.
