2014 AkLA Regional Conference Attendance Grant for an Employee, Volunteer or Board Member of a Library in Southcentral Alaska

Do you live in the Southcentral Region of Alaska and are you interested in attending the Alaska Library Association 2014 Conference in Anchorage? Grant assistance is available to help defray your costs. The Alaska Library Association is offering $500 to one library employee, volunteer and/or board member from a library in the Southcentral region as designated by the Alaska Dept. of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (see http://www.commerce.state.ak.us/dca/commdb/CF_Plans.cfm) to assist with travel and lodging expenses incurred while attending the 2014 AkLA Conference. The conference registration fee will also be waived for the award recipient.

Eligibility:

• You must be working in or with a library within the Southcentral region boundaries, as designated by the DCCED.
• You must be a library staff member, board member or volunteer.
• You must either currently be a member of the Alaska Library Association, or join before the grant is awarded.
• Submit your application by Thursday, February 3^rd, 2014.

Conditions for Grant Acceptance:

• The recipient will sign an acceptance statement agreeing to the following conditions:
• The recipient will attend three days of the conference.
• The recipient will receive their grant check at an awards function, to take place during the conference.
• The recipient will keep an informal log or diary about the sessions attended. The log or diary is to be submitted to the Continuing Education Committee as a basis for project evaluation. This will be used by the committee to improve this grant award and its requirements. Both positive and negative comments are helpful.

At this month’s meeting we’ll be giving an overview of ebooks available through ListenAlaska. Whether you’d like to learn more about downloading ebooks or are an expert and would like to share any tips you’ve learned, please join us for this hands-on session. Feel free to bring your favorite ebook reader or tablet.

This session will be open to university faculty, staff, and students, as well as FLIP members, so please feel free to spread the word and bring a friend.

The Anchorage Public Library is recruiting two librarians for the Mountain View branch library. Mountain View is the most diverse census district in the United States and the library has become a strong neighborhood partner with agencies and community groups serving the diverse residents and helping to revitalize the neighborhood.  The library itself is only three years old, LEED certified and a welcoming and friendly environment. While Mountain View Library welcomes and provides programming and services for all patrons, the library shares a parking lot with a middle school and is in walking distance of two elementary schools. As a result the library has a large number of thriving youth and teen programs.

Currently we are recruiting a youth services librarian to plan, present, and evaluate programming for youth from birth to age 18. The YS librarian will also assist with system wide collection development, do outreach to local schools, work on the reference desk, and manage the library in the branch manager’s absence.

We are also recruiting a branch manager who will manage the library staff, facility, and adult collections. The manager also plans and presents programs for adults, builds partnerships with local agencies and community groups, and participates as needed with system-wide initiatives.

At FLIP meetings, we often talk about different types of librarianship and the variety of career paths in libraries. Here is a chance to learn all about one of those potential options.

The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services New Member Interest Group (ALCTS NMIG) is offering a FREE webinar developed with all in mind—from the aspiring graduate student to the experienced library professional looking to undertake new responsibilities or for a career change.

Step behind the scenes to learn about the exciting variety of rewarding careers available in technical services librarianship. Our panel of experienced technical services librarians from a variety of positions and institutions will be the tour guides to the world of technical services. This isn’t your grandmother’s technical services department.

Often on the edge of developing technology and the implementation of it on a local level, technically able technical services librarians are necessary in the growth and development of the future of libraries. Panelists will speak about their daily work, what led them to decide on a career as a technical services librarian, and recommendations for those interested in pursuing a similar career path.
