As Data Proliferate, So Do Data-Related Graduate Programs

I thought this article from the Chronicle of Higher Education might be of interest to FLIP:

As Data Proliferate, So Do Data-Related Graduate Programs

“Last month the School of Information at the University of California at Berkeley started what officials there say is the first all-online master’s degree in information and data science. Its mission, in part, is to produce graduates with an awareness of the social and policy implications of data…”

Job Openings at the Anchorage Public Library

Via Elizabeth Moreau Nicolai

The Anchorage Public Library is recruiting two librarians for the Mountain View branch library. Mountain View is the most diverse census district in the United States and the library has become a strong neighborhood partner with agencies and community groups serving the diverse residents and helping to revitalize the neighborhood.  The library itself is only three years old, LEED certified and a welcoming and friendly environment. While Mountain View Library welcomes and provides programming and services for all patrons, the library shares a parking lot with a middle school and is in walking distance of two elementary schools. As a result the library has a large number of thriving youth and teen programs.

Currently we are recruiting a youth services librarian to plan, present, and evaluate programming for youth from birth to age 18. The YS librarian will also assist with system wide collection development, do outreach to local schools, work on the reference desk, and manage the library in the branch manager’s absence.

We are also recruiting a branch manager who will manage the library staff, facility, and adult collections. The manager also plans and presents programs for adults, builds partnerships with local agencies and community groups, and participates as needed with system-wide initiatives.

Both positions will be open until January 7th.

FLIP Meeting Cancelled

Hi everyone,

Well, we hate to do this, but we are cancelling the December 13 FLIP meeting. We just have too many events going on that day–no one can say the library isn’t a busy place! We will reschedule the ListenAlaska ebooks session for a future meeting. In the meantime, if you do have any questions about ListenAlaska or other ebooks, please feel free to contact Electronic Resources Librarian, Christie Ericson or visit the Ebooks How-To Guide.

Enjoy the holidays!

A career in library technical services, anyone?

At FLIP meetings, we often talk about different types of librarianship and the variety of career paths in libraries. Here is a chance to learn all about one of those potential options.

The Association for Library Collections and Technical Services New Member Interest Group (ALCTS NMIG) is offering a FREE webinar developed with all in mind—from the aspiring graduate student to the experienced library professional looking to undertake new responsibilities or for a career change.

Step behind the scenes to learn about the exciting variety of rewarding careers available in technical services librarianship. Our panel of experienced technical services librarians from a variety of positions and institutions will be the tour guides to the world of technical services. This isn’t your grandmother’s technical services department.

Often on the edge of developing technology and the implementation of it on a local level, technically able technical services librarians are necessary in the growth and development of the future of libraries. Panelists will speak about their daily work, what led them to decide on a career as a technical services librarian, and recommendations for those interested in pursuing a similar career path.

Upon completion of the webinar, attendees will better understand:

  • The different and varied positions available in technical services.
  • What a day in the life of a technical service librarian is like.
  • Ideas and tips regarding pursuing a career in librarianship—including grad school classes, internships, and skills.

Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2013
Time: 10 a.m. (Alaska)
For more details and registration information, visit the ALCTS page for Technical Services Librarians Matter at Your Library: Finding a Career in Technical Services

FLIP gets published

In case you missed it: an article about the founding and development of FLIP was published in the January 2013 issue of College and Research Libraries News, the official newsmagazine and publication of record for ACRL (Association of College and Research Libraries). We were very excited to record our experiences with FLIP and see it all in print! We hope you enjoy the article and encourage any comments or feedback you may have.
