Memberships, Organizations, and Interests
In her personal life, Schmidt was a philanthropist who supported conservation, opera and symphony, public media, and social services, as well as science and science education for women and minorities. She was active in the Geological Society of America, and was admitted to the American Institute of Professional Geologists and reached emeritus status in 1986. She helped found the Alaska Geological Society in 1958, was a member of the American Association of Petroleum Engineers, and served as president and trustee of the Brooks Range Library from 1979-1991. Schmidt was also an active member of the Anchorage Audubon Society, and a board member of the Alaska Center for the Environment.
