How many health professionals that you know have taken up "palm reading?" Have you? On February 6th the NN/LM PNR, the University of Washington Health Sciences Library, the Washington Medical Librarians Association (WMLA) and the Pacific Northwest Chapter of the Medical Library Association are co-sponsoring the MLA Satellite Teleconference: Sync or Swim: Managing the Flood of PDAs in Health Care.

This is a brown bag event; please feel free to bring your lunch. Beverages and desserts will be provided.

This continuing education opportunity is free because of the sponsorship from these organizations. The only cost you may incur is for parking. Parking at the University of Washington is available for $7 per day and is prorated if you are there for less time. For those unable to attend due to distance and time there will be a tape of the teleconference that will be made available through the Pacific Northwest RML.

Overview  In this hands-on workshop you will learn how to search for and evaluate health and medical information on the Internet for healthcare professionals and consumers. Print and commercial published database ready-reference tools for healthcare research are compared to the core Internet ready-reference tools. In addition you will learn about and have available on the Web a core e-library of 'the best' ready-reference resources for healthcare information on the Internet.

Audience Health and medical librarians or others who work with healthcare professionals and/or healthcare consumers.

Medical Informatics

This week-long survey course is designed to familiarize individuals with the application of computer technologies and information science in medicine. Through a combination of lectures and hands-on computer exercises, participants will be introduced to the conceptual and technical components of medical informatics.

Costs of attending this course, including travel, housing a meals at the Marine Biological Laboratory are fully supported by the National Library of Medicine, NIH.

First session: May 26-June 2, 2002
Second session: September 29-October 6, 2002

Application deadline: February 14, 2002 for either offering.
