Collection description:
This collection contains photographs taken by A.G. Maddren on his expeditions with the USGS in Alaska from 1909-1914, as well as unidentified expeditions from 1906-1908. The photographs are housed in four albums documenting these expeditions, and the collection contains one of these original albums (of the 1911-1912 Alaska-Canada boundary survey expedition) plus photocopies of the other three (documenting the Koyukuk-Chandalar expedition in 1909, the Innoko-Iditarod expedition in 1910, and the Yakataga and Kuskokwim expeditions in 1913-1914). There are also 100 of Maddren’s nitrate negatives of the expeditions that were originally housed in the pages of the albums; many of these negatives are different images than the ones in the albums. Subjects of the photos and negatives include glaciers, rivers, mountains, geologic formations, expedition members and camps, placer gold mines, towns, villages, and other scenery. The collection also contains contact prints of the nitrate negatives and copy prints of selected photographs made by Archives and Special Collections from the original albums.

Custodial history: Materials in this collection were originally held by Alaska Pacific University (APU). In 1984, APU loaned Archives & Special Collections 107 nitrate negatives taken by Alfred G. Maddren for copying. The original negatives were returned to APU in 1985 but were later transferred back to the Archives in 2005. APU later loaned the four albums in this collection to the Archives for photocopying. In 2005, one of the four original albums was transferred to the Archives.

Acquisition note: The collection was loaned to the archives for copying by Alaska Pacific University in 1984. The nitrate negatives and the original Alaska-Canada boundary survey photograph album were transferred to the Archives in 2005. Alaska Pacific University retains ownership of this collection and has placed it on deposit with Archives and Special Collections.

Processing information: This collection was described by Jeffrey Sinnott in 2006.
