Organizational history:
The Russian Orthodox American Messenger was first published in 1896 in New York by the North American diocese of the Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church. Throughout most of its history (1896-1973), it was issued either on a semi-monthly or monthly basis. The Messenger served as a source of information about church, village, and other activities in Alaska. The Alaska Index Project was the second major part of an effort to locate and publicize historically important Russian Orthodox Church archival materials. The first part was Barbara Smith’s history, inventory, and analysis of church archives in Alaska. The second part involved the microfilming and indexing of the Messenger. The microfilm was produced by the Library of Congress. The Alaskan names index, along with an annotated list of articles, was compiled by Barbara Smith and Anne Sudkamp. It was funded by the Alaska Historical Commission. The resulting work, Alaska names and places in the Russian Orthodox American Messenger was published in Anchorage in 1985.
