Captains Glenn and Kulp; 1898.

The photographer may have been W. C. Mendenhall. The location is Portage Bay in the vicinity of Prince William Sound in Southcentral Alaska. In 1898, Captain Edwin Forbes Glenn and his men were ordered to explore routes to the Copper and Susitna Rivers from Prince William Sound. In the following year, they were sent to Cook Inlet to explore routes to the Tanana River. In the photograph, both men are wearing snow goggles and snow shoes.

Reason for Selection: This photograph was taken on the exploratory expedition led by Captain Glenn. This is a representative photograph from the Glenn collection. The Glenn papers primarily relate to his activities Alaska. (DFW)
