Karl Eid with Sen. and Mrs.Bartlett; May 1965.
Karl Eid Collection. Series 4b.
The photographer is unknown. The picture was taken in the Anchorage-Westward Hotel. The occasion was a public reception honoring the senator for twenty years of service in the U. S. Congress.
Reason for Selection: Besides documenting an event in the senator's life, the photograph depicts one of the many beautiful accomplishments in cake making by master pastry chef, Karl Eid (its also probably one of the largest). The 350 pound cake was decorated with marzipan totem poles and cocoa paintings on wafers. Eid taught at Anchorage Community College and the University of Alaska Anchorage. Karl Eid is also a former Olympian as well as an important ski jumping coach. The UAA archives has photographs of his culinary accomplishments in both the Karl Eid collection and among university records. (JS)
