U. S. Revenue Marine Vessel in Sitka Harbor; ca. mid 1880s.
Thomas W. Benham Collection. Series B.
This is an Edward de Groff photograph. The location is Sitka harbor. The ship is the U. S. Revenue Marine Vessel Richard Rush.
Reason for Selection: This view is of one of the several Revenue Marine vessels which patrolled Alaskan waters (particularly the Bering Sea coast and the Aleutian Islands) throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century. This ship closely resembles the Revenue Marine vessel Thomas Corwin. The picture is also a fine example of the photographic work of Thomas de Groff of Sitka, Alaska. (DFW)
